June is National Homeownership Month, and affordable homeownership needs to be on California’s to-do list.
✅ Build more homes families can afford to own
✅ Preserve affordable homeownership opportunities
✅ Invest in proven programs that help working families build stability
✅ Restore funding for CalHome
As final state budget negotiations continue, we need one more strong push to make sure CalHome is included in the final 2026–27 State Budget.

CalHome is California’s only state program dedicated to the production and preservation of affordable homes for ownership. But the Governor’s May Revise included no funding for it.

This National Homeownership Month, help us send a clear message: California must invest in homes families can afford to own.

California’s budget negotiations are in the final stretch and affordable homeownership funding is on the line. With the Governor’s May Revise released, the Administration and Legislature are now making final decisions about what will be included in the 2026–27 State Budget. We need to make sure CalHome is part of it.

CalHome is California’s only state program dedicated to the production and preservation of affordable homes for ownership. Without renewed funding, shovel-ready affordable homeownership projects across the state could stall.

Without sustained investment in affordable housing and homelessness programs, the state risks fewer homes, increased homelessness, and lost economic opportunity. With previous bond funding depleted, General Fund investments are essential to meet immediate needs. A coalition of over 100 organizations is urging the Legislature to invest at least $3.3 billion in these programs. Now is the time to act. Congratulations to the new California State Senate leadership under the guidance of the new President pro Tempore Monique Limon. We’re especially encouraged to see Senator Jesse Arreguin elevate homeownership as a priority this year as the Chair of the Senate Housing Committee.

As Senator Arreguin so powerfully shared, for millennials and working families, the dream of owning a home in California often feels out of reach. That’s exactly why sustained investment in programs like CalHome matter. Expanding access to affordable homeownership isn’t just a policy choice; it’s a pathway to stability, equity, and stronger communities.

We look forward to working with Senate leadership in the 2026 legislative session to advance solutions that help more Californians achieve the dream of homeownership.

The median age of first-time home buyers has hit an all-time high of 40 in 2025, according to a report from the National Association of Realtors.

There are clear reasons behind the trend. Younger Americans are struggling to save for a down payment as they stretch their paychecks to cover student loans, a rising cost of living and, most critically, high rents, which make saving money harder. And even if they have saved diligently, a persistent lack of affordable housing inventory has left them shut out of the market.

Habitat for Humanity California, homeowners, state leaders, and housing advocates came together to call on Governor Newsom to restore $500M for CalHome, the tool we need to build thousands of homes and open the door to generational stability for working families across California.

Yesterday's turnout showed just how powerful this movement is. We’re not done, and together, we’ll keep fighting for the homes and futures California families deserve.
