He was very dedicated to our Council 3080 and Mullaly Assembly 157, and beyond. The Color Corps / Honor Guard has been requested from multiple assemblies for the Mass on Saturday. Al died peacefully at his home of 65 years. Here is the obituary from the family, and it includes all of the details:

Albert M. Souckar

Al Souckar, a 70-year resident of Fort Lauderdale and Oakland Park, passed away peacefully on June 25, 2023 at the age of 95. He was born in 1927 in Pawtucket, RI to Syrian immigrant parents, Michael and Annie Souckar. He is survived by his three children Mary Theresa and her husband Doug Kraft, Catherine and her husband Ray Daley, and Monsignor Michael Souckar, and three grandchildren Steven and his wife Stephanie Kraft, Emily Kraft, and Caitlyn Daley; along with his sister Gloria Toye and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Al is predeceased by his wife Najlie (nee Albert) Souckar after 54 years of marriage, and sisters Mary Ann Bonich and Florence Gannage.

In 1945. at the age of 17, Al enlisted in the United States Navy during World War II and served in the South Pacific. After the war, Al moved to Fort Lauderdale to help his cousins with their newly opened restaurant Doumar's. This started Al's legendary career in hospitality which included managing the Fort Lauderdale Country Club and then in 1959 opening his popular sports-themed bar The Lincoln Lounge. Regulars included locals, tourists, and NY Yankee baseball players down for spring training. Al was one of the first to sponsor charter bus service to Miami Dolphin home games, including the 1972 "perfect season." His was also one of the first bars to try out a new beer called Miller Lite. After selling his bar, Al worked at William Thies & Sons for 17 years.

Once retired, Al volunteered for 24 years at Holy Cross Hospital logging over 6,500 volunteer hours. Ever devoted to his Catholic faith, Al attended Mass at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church since its establishment in 1960 and served as an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion. He was a 75-year member of the Knights of Columbus and proud that, during a trip to Italy, he had a private audience with Saint Pope John Paul II. He also enjoyed meeting his buddies and fellow veterans each Thursday at the American Legion Hall to share stories and a cold beer.

As you know from previous emails, our brother Sir Knight David J. Osterberger passed away early Wednesday morning at 76 after a long, brave fight with cancer. He had been a member of the Knights of Columbus since 1966, the same year he married his wife Mary. For many years he has been a stalwart in every way: loyal, reliable, and hard-working. Dave served his parish (St. Louis Church, & in recent years Nativity Church), Council 4851, Monahan Hall, and our Assembly 157. He was not just your typical “PGK, PFN, FDD” - the common initials for those who’ve been elected to lead their council, their assembly, and appointed to be a District Deputy. He was a longtime tireless Color Corps Commander, and a dedicated Faithful Comptroller (serving through this past June). He served both the Florida State Council and the Florida Fourth Degree District, usually without many knowing how much volunteer work he put in behind the scenes. The many who so highly respect Dave were very happy to see him recognized as the Fourth Degree Exemplification Class Honoree last year, then at the State Convention this year.

A viewing will be held today (Friday) from 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM at Landmark Funeral Home in Hollywood (4200 Hollywood Blvd).

Dave’s Funeral Mass will be celebrated tomorrow (Saturday) morning at 10:00 at Nativity Church in Hollywood (5220 Johnson Street).

He has served in the assembly’s Color Corps for many years, including a long term as commander.

Our Assembly remembers all those Americans who have fallen to protect our freedom, and we are eternally grateful. ... And, we always remember all of our deceased brother Sir Knights, and their families. Here is our memorial (pictured today). If you are interested in making arrangements to have your name added to it someday, contact any Assembly 157 officer. A Mass is celebrated here once a year in the nearby pyramid chapel, with a procession afterwards with the color corps to the memorial and a blessing.
