magine if this was our new social norm?

The North Branch Library is surrounded by 7000 acres of beautiful, pollinator-friendly, native meadow. Volunteers and community partners, including Master Gardeners, Pheasants Forever, and Minnesota Native Landscapes came together to establish these gardens in 2018-19 and they are now well established and absolutely beautiful.

If you visit throughout the summer, there are new flowers blooming every few weeks. Current blooms include yarrow, beardtongue, lupine, wild white indigo, spiderwort, and common milkweed.

The monarch sculpture was created by Crysten Nesseth of Iron Maid Art. Manitou Fund provided grant funds, and local resident Tom Anderson was a big driving force behind the citywide effort to reestablish native habitat and become a monarch destination.

The water at Square Lake was clear and beautiful this morning!

Unfortunately, however, a few other beaches in the Twin Cities are currently closed due to bluegreen algae blooms. Watch out for any lakes with green smelly water or floating blobs that look like p**p. If the water is very warm it’s better to stay out as well.

Big Marine and Square Lakes in northern Washington County consistently earn high marks for having some of the cleanest, clearest water in the Twin Cities. Happily, has public beaches on both lakes with options for boating, kayak/SUP, and fishing as well.

See you in the middle of Square Lake sometime soon!

Adding native plants to your landscape is a great way to support pollinators and wildlife + be water friendly too.

🌺 just launched “Lawns to Legumes: Habitat at Home,” a free, guided program that supports Minnesotans in creating, expanding, or maintaining pollinator-friendly spaces this summer and fall. BlueThumb.org

🌱 Buy some native plants TOMORROW - Sat., June 6 (9am-1pm) at the Landscape Revival in Lake Elmo.

💰 Many cities and watershed organizations in Minnesota offer mini grants to buy native plants!

👩‍🌾 I’ll also be teaming up with City of Woodbury to offer a talk about water conservation on Tuesday., June 9 (6-7pm). Mnwcd.org/events for details.

What a fun surprise! This week,
and are recognizing 14 social media creators who are reaching new audiences and sharing engaging educational content to help create a more sustainable future. I’m on the list!

Check out the other creators and give them a follow as well. There are a lot of different approaches to education and I think it’s great to have everyone lending their talents to a common goal!

It was a beautiful day to spend along the Mississippi River today during a “Learning from place: Bdote” tour organized by and

As we celebrated the 10th anniversary of We Are Water, we were guided by three Dakota women who shared stories about their people and this place.

“These grounds are sacred. They hold our tears, our blood, and our memories.”
