It is with great honor that we announce that Lebanon Volunteer Fire Chief Jay Schall has been named the New London County Fire Chief of the Year by the Connecticut Fire Chiefs Association.
Chief Schall joined the Lebanon Volunteer Fire Department as a regular member in 2013. He was no stranger to emergency services, having begun his career with the Ellington Fire Department and Ambulance Corps in Ellington, Connecticut. From the start, Chief Schall became a fixture in the community, known for his contagious personality and dedication to serving others.
Throughout his tenure with the department, Chief Schall steadily advanced through the ranks, being promoted to Lieutenant in 2016, Captain in 2018, and ultimately Fire Chief in 2020. During his leadership, he has spearheaded numerous projects and chaired multiple committees. One of his most notable accomplishments was establishing and expanding the Lebanon Volunteer Fire Department’s social media presence. Chief Schall laid the foundation for what has become an effective platform for community engagement, often referring to it as “telling our story.”
Chief Schall also led the department through the COVID-19 pandemic, one of the most challenging and uncertain periods faced by emergency responders. Additionally, he was entrusted with developing a town-wide radio communications plan, bringing together stakeholders from the Police Department, Fire Department, School District, and Public Works Department to create a communications network that significantly improved interoperability during emergencies.
One of Chief Schall’s greatest strengths is his ability to bring people together. Whether coordinating complex projects, building partnerships, or sharing his world-famous Taco Soup, he has a unique talent for fostering camaraderie and teamwork.
Chief Schall holds advanced certifications as an NFPA Fire Officer and Fire Instructor and currently serves as a Communications Specialist with Life Star Air Ambulance. To say we are proud is an understatement. Chief Schall exemplifies leadership, professionalism, and service. We congratulate him on this well-deserved recognition as the New London County Fire Chief of the Year.
