Meet Our Scoutmaster Corps!

❤️ We are incredibly grateful for this amazing group of volunteers who help make Troop 43 the thriving program it is today.

⏰ People often hear that Scouting is "just an hour a week," but our leaders know that's far from the reality. From planning campouts and meetings to training, mentoring youth, coordinating service projects, and spending weekends outdoors, these dedicated volunteers give countless hours to support our Scouts.

What makes it even more special? Every one of them is a volunteer. No one gets paid. They give their time, talents, and energy because they believe in the Scouting program and the opportunities it provides for young people.

Because of their commitment, our Scouts learn leadership, build confidence, develop outdoor skills, serve their community, and create memories that will last a lifetime.

👏 To our Scoutmaster Corps: thank you for investing in our youth and helping shape the next generation of leaders. Troop 43 is better because of you! ⚜️

🔦Leader Highlight: Scoutmaster Mrs. Matthews

Behind every great troop are dedicated volunteers who invest their time, energy, and hearts into helping young people grow—and Troop 43 is fortunate to have Scoutmaster Mrs. Matthews leading the way.

Mrs. Matthews joined Troop 43 in 2021 after previously serving as a leader for her daughter's Girl Scout troop. Since then, she has helped guide countless Scouts through adventures, challenges, and achievements.

When asked about her favorite part of being Scoutmaster, she shared:
“I love camping, sitting around the campfire, and watching Scouts gain confidence. It's an incredible journey to watch them grow, mature, and become young adults."

In addition to completing her position-specific training, Mrs. Matthews has served on staff at National Youth Leadership Training (NYLT) for multiple years, helping develop leadership skills in Scouts from across the council.

Thank you, Mrs. Matthews, for your dedication to Troop 43 and for helping shape the next generation of leaders, citizens, and adventurers. We are grateful for all you do! 👏

📸 Our social media volunteer took the day off...

So naturally, we checked her camera roll. 😆

Turns out it's 5% normal photos and 95% Scouts camping, hiking, serving the community, earning awards, having adventures, and making memories.

Honestly, we're not sure if she has a family—or if Troop 43 IS her family. 😂

👏 Thanks to all of our volunteers who capture the moments, tell our story, and help share the adventures of Scouting with our community.

🐟Merit Badge Monday: Fish & Wildlife Management 🦌

🤔Have you ever wondered how wildlife biologists protect animal populations or how conservation efforts help keep ecosystems healthy?

The Fish & Wildlife Management Merit Badge teaches Scouts about conservation, habitat management, and the important role humans play in protecting fish and wildlife resources.

⚜️Scouts explore local environmental challenges, learn how wildlife is managed, complete hands-on conservation projects, and observe animals in their natural habitats.

🪺From building nest boxes and creating wildlife habitats to identifying species and studying conservation practices, this merit badge helps Scouts develop a deeper appreciation for the natural world around them.

🌲This merit badge is perfect for Scouts who love the outdoors and may be interested in careers such as wildlife biologist, habitat management specialist, conservation officer, fisheries scientist, veterinarian, or environmental educator.

🌎 Scouting isn't just about camping—it's about developing skills, exploring careers, and learning how to make a positive impact on the world around us.

⚜️ Adventure. Conservation. Leadership.

🎲🃏🎮 Through California Friday Night Live, our Scouts have been learning about the issue of teen gambling and taking action in our community to raise awareness and offer support.

From surveying local teens, creating educational infographics, producing a public service announcement video, and visiting local merchants to encourage participation in the "Not On My Watch" pledge, our Scouts have been working to make a difference.

💪 As Scouts who value healthy choices, strong communities, and active outdoor lifestyles, this issue is important to us.

👏 Thank you to our community partners, local businesses, and supporters for helping us invest in a healthier future for our youth.

"Betting On Our Future" is a project of the California Friday Night Live Partnership.

Meet our Assistant Scoutmaster for Program, Mr. Wooten!

⚜️His role is to support the Senior Patrol Leader and help develop and implement the program planned by the Patrol Leaders' Council (PLC).

🐾Mr. Wooten's Scouting journey began when his son joined Cub Scouts as a Tiger. His daughter was part of the unofficial "Dragon Den"—because she was dragged along on every Scouting adventure—until she was old enough to officially join as a Lion Cub. 🦁

Over the years, he has served as a Den Leader, Treasurer for another local pack, and currently serves as Cubmaster for Pack 43 in addition to his role with the troop.

He is passionate about learning and regularly attends trainings to better serve Scouts. He is BALOO trained, certified in First Aid/Wilderness First Aid and CPR, trained in Paddle Craft Safety so the troop can enjoy canoeing adventures, and most recently completed Wood Badge.

His favorite part of Scouting is spending time with his kids, enjoying the outdoors through camping and canoeing, and teaching Scouts life skills that will serve them for years to come.

Thank you, Mr. Wooten, for your service, leadership, and commitment to our Scouts and Troop 43! 👏⚜️

🔦 Leader Spotlight

Please join us in recognizing Mr. Costello! ⚜️

His daughter started in Cub Scouts as a Wolf, which helped spark his deeper involvement in the Scouting program. Before joining Troop 43, he served as an Assistant Scoutmaster in another local troop for a year, bringing valuable experience and leadership to our Scouts.

Since joining Troop 43, he has continued to lead by example and stay actively engaged in supporting our youth as an Assistant Scoutmaster and Patrol Advisor. Most recently, he attended Wood Badge, Scouting’s premier leadership training program, further investing in his ability to serve and mentor our Scouts.

His favorite part of Scouting is simple—spending time with his daughter, connecting with others who share similar values, and of course… CAMPING 🏕️ and HIKING. 🥾

He also enjoys learning and attending trainings, always looking for ways to grow as a leader and better support our Scouts.

Thank you, Mr. Costello, for living the Scout Oath and Scout Law in all you do and for helping guide our Scouts by example. We truly appreciate you!

Happy Belated Birthday, Troop 43! 🥳

⚜️On May 18, 1938, Troop 43 was officially founded with 26 boys by the Oakdale 20-30 Club. What started as a commitment to serving local youth has grown into nearly nine decades of adventure, leadership, service, and lifelong memories.

When the 20-30 Club disbanded in 1943, its members formed the Oakdale Lions Club and proudly brought Troop 43 with them. Since then, the Lions Club has continued to support generations of Scouts, helping our troop thrive and grow year after year. 🦁

❤️We are incredibly grateful to the Oakdale Lions Club, our dedicated volunteers, Scout families, alumni, and the entire Oakdale community for investing in young people and keeping the spirit of Scouting alive for 88 years.

👏Here's to the countless Scouts who have worn the Troop 43 neckerchief, the leaders who guided them, and the community that made it all possible.

🎂Happy Birthday, Troop 43!

🔦 Leader Highlight

Mr. Miller is relatively new to Scouting, with his son beginning his Scouting journey just a year ago as an Arrow of Light Scout in Pack 43.

From the very beginning, he jumped in with both feet—completing BALOO training, attending Wood Badge, and stepping up to serve our youth.

In his new role as an Assistant Scoutmaster and Patrol Advisor, he will continue helping guide and mentor Scouts as they grow in leadership, character, and confidence.

We appreciate Mr. Miller's willingness to learn, his commitment to the Scouting program, and his dedication to investing in the next generation of leaders.

When asked what his favorite part of Scouting is, his answer was simple: watching Scouts learn, grow, and develop into capable young leaders.

Thank you, Mr. Miller, for all you do. Troop 43 appreciates you!
