Our foundation was formed to enhance, promote and support the public school of Oak Ridge, their students and their mission. We congratulate Elementary Instructional Technology Coach, Mrs. Henderlight on the success gained from her grant to pilot Logitech Crayons with K-1st grade teachers & students at Linden, Willow Brook, & Woodland! Her goal was to provide a more realistic pencil to paper experience when using an iPad & stylus. The Logitech Crayon is a more robust & durable stylus & provides a better experience when interacting with learning apps such as Seesaw, the elementary learning management system, or "Wet, Dry, Try" a beginning handwriting app. A teacher at Willow Brook remarks, "I like the high quality of them and think they're bigger & easier for the students to use with their I-pads." According to a teacher at Linden, " The students absolutely LOVE these styluses, & quickly learned how to use them & charge them when needed. Having a class set to use on a permanent basis would be very good for their fine motor development while using their iPads."

Congratulations to Mr. Doss, RMS 5th & 6th grade STEM teacher, on the successful implementation of his Lego Robotic Kit project! Mr. Doss reports, "We have spent a lot of time using the Lego Robotics kits in my classes. They have been a huge addition to the learning experience for my students. This age group is perfect for Lego Robotics. The experience received building & programming to complete various challenges will be helpful in future robotics education for these students."

Please join us in congratulating, JMS band teacher, Alex Cantrell!

JMS band was awarded funds to order ten clarinets & four alto saxophones to ensure that instrument inventory was able to keep up with projected growth of the program. Mr. Cantrell reports, "I am very happy to report that program growth met our expectations and we were able to meet the needs of every student (on their instrument of first choice) in our band program this year. We were able to accommodate 18 new clarinet students in 5th grade alone, while still meeting the needs of all our existing clarinet students. We were also able to start three students on alto saxophone in the 6th grade, and provide one 7th grade student who was not able to provide their own with a saxophone as well. This grant has allowed our program to put a high quality instrument in the hands of every student that needs one, and it has been an unbelievable boost to the JMS Band." He goes on to say, "The new instruments are all being used every day and are being well cared for. All our students are very appreciative of the gift we’ve been given and are well aware of how lucky they are. The new instruments will ensure that the Jefferson Middle School Band is able to provide a high quality music education for our students for years to come. Thank you ORPSEF!" Congratulations to ORHS art teacher, Joseph Moseley, on the successful implementation of his grant! Mr. Moseley was awarded funds to purchase digital single lens reflex cameras, lenses, and accessories for use both in & outside of Photography classes. Mr. Moseley reports, "For in-class instruction, we now have enough cameras for the class to be split into small groups of three, ensuring that everyone gets ample time in practical, hands on practice in the skill we are covering each day. Students are also assigned out of class projects & for those, they are allowed to check out the equipment needed to be successful in their project. Some students will need to check out a full camera set up, while others may only need to check out an accessory or a particular lens that will work with their personal cameras. This gives them an amazing amount of flexibility and ownership of their photos since they are given options on what is the best tool to create their idea. We’ve only had one competition so far this year, but we took Best Photograph and two other students placed in the best senior section of the competition. All three photographs that won were taken on cameras purchased by the ORPSEF Grant. Going forward we are looking forward to more success in competitions and our new Digital Arts Foundations class will begin using the cameras within a few weeks. Also next semester we will be adding a Dual Enrollment Photography class in conjunction with Roane State Community College along with our Photography and Digital Arts classes. Thank you so much for allowing our students more and better access to equipment that is furthering their understanding of Photography through the ORPSEF Grant."
