⭐ "It made a difference to this one."

A young boy walking along a beach discovered thousands of starfish stranded by the outgoing tide. He began returning them to the ocean, one by one.

When someone questioned whether his efforts could possibly matter, the boy picked up another starfish and tossed it into the water.

His actions made a difference to that one.

That simple story is the inspiration behind United Way of Anderson County's Annual Starfish Awards Luncheon.

Throughout our community, people are making a difference in the lives of their neighbors. Some provide food, some offer shelter, some create opportunities for children, and others help individuals find the support they need.

On Thursday, November 12, we'll celebrate these individuals, recognize our Starfish Hero of the Year, and highlight the nonprofit partners working to create lasting change.

Because making a difference doesn't always mean helping thousands. Sometimes, it starts with helping one.

Finding housing can involve barriers that are difficult to navigate without help.

A period should never stand in the way of a school day. 💛

This morning, United Way shared an update on Project Period with the Oak Ridge Breakfast Rotary Club, alongside community partners reporting on their Rotary grants.

Funded entirely by the Oak Ridge Breakfast Rotary Club, Project Period provides kits to students who might otherwise miss school because they lack period products. Each decorative makeup bag contains period and hygiene products, a change of undergarments, and a piece of candy—offering practical support in a bag students can feel comfortable carrying.

We’ve provided more than 2,500 bags since the program began! Next up: packing 600 more during our Day of Caring packing party on October 15.

Thank you, Oak Ridge Breakfast Rotary Club, for helping students stay comfortable, confident, and ready to learn.

A former National Guard Armory is being transformed into a place for healing.

Billy Edmonds, executive director of the [Free Medical Clinic], shared the vision for the Armory project during the recent [CNS Y-12] bus tour. The clinic provides no-charge medical and mental health care for low-income and uninsured residents. Its planned move will expand capacity and bring a broader range of health services together under one roof.

United Way appreciates CNS Y-12’s generosity, volunteerism, and community support. Taking time to see projects like this firsthand reflects its continued investment in the well-being of our neighbors.

Thank you, Billy, for sharing what this transformation can mean for local families.
