One wonders about the terrible kelalot, the curses, in Parashat Bechukotai. Are they meant to be purely punishments for not observing the commandments of the Torah, or is the Torah hinting to something much deeper?

A statement from Rabbi Ben Vineburg:

As details continue to emerge about the tragic event at Temple Israel yesterday I want to issue a desperate plea to members of the Detroit Jewish community and those who support us. As we begin to process this new reality it may become almost too easy for us to point fingers at a specific demographic, ideology, and worldview. Yes, the suspect was of Lebanese descent, yes the suspect and or his family were likely Muslim, and yes this person decided to utilize terror as a means of retaliation for recent military action affecting his family in the Middle East. However, he does not and will never represent the majority of the aforementioned groups of people who are good, peace loving, and law abiding citizens both here in Michigan and abroad.

Hatred and division are the elixir of the serpent and once we engage in it we are doing precisely as our enemies desire. Now is the time to join hands as Jews, Muslims, Christians, and all other communities and proclaim as one that a better and peaceful way is possible and that goodness and mercy shall henceforth rule the day.

May God bless and protect those whose hearts are pure and lead us closer to light amidst the darkness. Amen.
