Secular Jewish Chicago is the social-media arm of the Secular Jewish Community and School, a member-led and -run organization that meets in Oak Park and serves the greater-Chicago area. We are diverse and inclusive in our beliefs, backgrounds and family structures. We welcome anyone who wants to learn more about Jewish heritage in a nonreligious context. We are building a community for and of secu
lar Jews in the Chicago area and connecting to communities like us everywhere. We offer Sunday school for children, adult-education sessions, holiday and life-cycle celebrations and other activities that provide a sense of Jewish identity and transmit values of social justice and responsibility. Our Sunday school includes six levels: pre-schoolers and kindergartners, first and second graders, third and fourth graders, fifth and sixth graders, and b'nai mitzvah students. The b'nai mitzvah class includes three vital components: an independent study of intellectual and cultural interest to the student, a community-service and social-action project, and a celebratory community ceremony that shows that the bar/bat mitzvah understands and accepts the moral obligations incumbent on an adult Jew. While children are in their Sunday school classes, many parents and other members participate in adult-education sessions. We serve bagels, coffee and juice and discuss a wide variety of topics. At all levels, children join the adults for singing (in Hebrew, Yiddish, and English) and cultural celebrations. We invite individuals, couples and families to join our growing community. Members participate at any level comfortable for them. to noon, from September through May in Oak Park, just west of Chicago. Your participation and ideas are welcome. Join our growing community!
