Caring Arts Foundation

We provide emotional support and encourage creative expression for Chicago area cancer patients and their families through the arts.

Our Caring Arts program pairs artists in the community with cancer treatment centers, as a way to provide cancer patients and caregivers guidance in finding their own expressive voice through an art form. Artists are high-caliber professionals from a variety of disciplines, including painting, photography, journaling, music & dance.

We seek perfection. It drives us, sometimes in pointless pursuits. After all, what and where is perfection? Yesterday at Wellness House we strove to “Keep it Loose,” and to create beauty in all its “imperfection.” Stunning results and we had so much fun doing it. To create is to live!

Outstanding efforts in today’s Caring Arts class at Waterford Place, Aurora. The theme was “Closeups & Crops,” how images change when you tighten up the view. Acrylics, watercolor or soft pastels. Fabulous work!

Waterford Place hosted their annual Family Arts Fest with Caring Arts providing a number of activities: paper tube animal making, tissue paper mosaics, music by The Arthurs and chalk walk. There was also bead bracelet making, rock painting, face painting & a collaborative mural. Rush-Copley’s Therapy Dogs made an appearance too. Fun, creative family time.

Our painting theme today at Wellness House was “Crops & Closeups,” turning realistic items into form, texture, color and almost abstract imagery, in the manner of Georgia O’Keefe. A new way of seeing. One first timer, who assured us she couldn’t draw or paint, created a stunning pastel abstract flower. We all can create, you just have to believe it!

One of our Caring Arts board members, Kathy O’ Rourke, performs each month in the outpatient oncology unit at Advocate-Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, courtesy of Gilda's Club Chicago. Music is a blessing when you’re dealing with cancer.

We repeated the theme of “School’s Out” at this month’s Caring Arts class at Waterford Place. We love that each person chooses a different image to create with different materials: acrylics on canvas, watercolor or soft pastels. What’s your mood? Doesn’t matter, all the results are great! And gloriously different from each other.
