At Butterflies N Effect, we create spaces where young people can talk, process emotions, build healthy relationships, and develop emotional intelligence.

That’s why the conversation happening at Hyde Park Academy caught my attention.

When students say a space helped them feel safe, supported, and heard, I believe we should pause and listen.

Our young people are telling us something important:

Connection matters.
Belonging matters.
Healing matters.

And schools, families, nonprofits, and communities all have a role to play.

One of the hardest lessons to learn is this:

Loving your parent does not require denying your experience.

You can appreciate the sacrifices they made.
You can understand they were doing the best they could.
And you can still acknowledge the impact of what you lived through.

Healing begins when we stop pretending both can’t exist at the same time.

This conversation is for every child who felt responsible for fixing things that were never theirs to fix.

I just watched a video from a young man basically saying:“If you had emotionally healthy parents growing up… you were blessed.”

And honestly?That conversation hit hard.

⚠️ Disclaimer:Yes, he was cussing.Yes, he was emotional.But sometimes pain doesn’t come out polished.

Because the truth is:Some parents are amazing.Some are overwhelmed.Some are emotionally unavailable.And some are raising children while still trying to heal themselves.

So for the next 14 days, we’re having real conversations:Parents.Children.Trauma.Emotional safety.Nervous systems.Generational patterns.And what it REALLY takes to prepare children for adulthood.

Not for blame.For awareness.For healing.For growth.

This conversation is bigger than “kids being bad.”

As a middle school educator in Chicago, I’ve been listening carefully to students talk about these recent teen takeovers happening across the city.

What I’m hearing underneath the behavior is this:
many young people are craving connection, stimulation, belonging, freedom, and safe places to gather.

But too often, there’s no structure, no organized outlet, and no guidance around what healthy community actually looks like.

This generation is growing up overstimulated, emotionally overloaded, and socially hungry.

And when there are limited safe spaces designed specifically for teens, they create their own spaces even when those gatherings become unsafe.

This summer, we need real conversations between:
• parents
• educators
• churches
• community organizations
• city leaders
• youth mentors
• and the teens themselves

What are we offering teenagers this summer besides “stay out of trouble”?

Because teens WILL gather.
The question is whether we help create safer, structured environments for connection before chaos becomes the outlet.

Many children are not struggling because they are “bad kids.”
They are overwhelmed, overstimulated, emotionally exhausted, and trying to navigate a world moving faster than ever before.

And truthfully… many parents are trying to figure it out too.

That’s why I’m hosting this virtual workshop:

A huge congratulations to Butterfly Morgan and Butterfly Madyson on their graduation from 8th grade! 🎓💛

Seeing our students walk across that stage reminds us why the work of Butterflies N Effect matters so deeply. When we pour into our youth with mentorship, encouragement, leadership opportunities, SEL support, creativity, and community this is the kind of greatness that blossoms. 🌻🦋

One Butterfly was recognized for Outstanding Citizenship, while another was acknowledged as a Future President and honestly, we are not surprised at all. Leadership, kindness, confidence, and purpose are exactly the seeds we strive to plant within every child who comes through our program.
