💜🦋 Auntie TikTok Went Outside! But Baby, It Was About More Than Just Going Somewhere! 😂💃🏾

Cardi B said GO OUTSIDE, and Coach Booker understood the assignment! 😂

This weekend was about community, connection, sisterhood, inspiration, and being surrounded by GREATNESS!

I had the pleasure of attending the BIBO (Beauty In, Beauty Out) Gala alongside my line sister, seeing so many incredible individuals recognized for their contributions to the community, including Chicago’s legendary Uncle George Daniels! 💜👏🏾

There’s something powerful about being present for the people you care about while witnessing greatness all around you. That’s what sisterhood and community are about!

Then came the opportunity to experience the Obama Presidential Center with my 90-year-old mother. Seeing history through her eyes while reflecting on the adversity Barack Obama overcame reminded me that even when the odds are stacked against you, YES, WE CAN! 🙌🏾

And Auntie even enjoyed a FIRE hamburger! 🍔🔥 No pictures, though, because I was too busy eating! 😂

As an educator and nonprofit founder, I walked away inspired to elevate my own work. I GOT NEXT!

Here’s Coach Booker’s takeaway: It’s not just WHERE you go. It’s WHO you go with, WHO you surround yourself with, WHAT you experience, and WHAT you bring back from those spaces.

Whether it’s a teen takeover, a gala, or a community gathering, be intentional about the spaces you occupy. Go where you can support others, build relationships, gain knowledge, and witness what’s possible.

Because going outside should sometimes do more than entertain you. It should INSPIRE you to become greater! 🦋💜

Your Future Me is depending on your Present Me. 👀

That test you know is coming, but you stay up gaming until midnight. 🎮
That project you keep saying, “I’ll do it later.”
That deadline your parent offered to help you remember.
That moment you act like you don’t need anybody…then suddenly it’s an emergency. 😩😂

Here’s the part we talked about in class: sometimes procrastination isn’t simply being “lazy.” Sometimes your nervous system gets overwhelmed and goes into freeze, so instead of starting, you avoid.

But understanding why you’re stuck doesn’t mean you stay stuck. 💯

Ask yourself: “Is what Present Me is doing right now helping Future Me…or making Future Me clean up the mess?” 🫣

Your future isn’t built all at once. It’s built through the little choices you make today. 🦋

Parenting doesn’t come with perfect vision. 💛

You can love your child deeply, show up consistently, make sacrifices, and STILL have a blind spot.

Sometimes it comes from how we were raised. Sometimes it’s something we’ve normalized. And sometimes we’re so busy trying to protect our children that we don’t realize how something may feel from their side.

Having a blind spot doesn’t make you a bad parent. Refusing to look at it when it’s brought to your attention is where the problem can begin.

Strong parents aren’t parents who get everything right. They’re parents who are willing to ask:

💭 “Is there something I’m not seeing?”
💭 “What is my child experiencing that I may be missing?”
💭 “Do I need to adjust, even if my intentions were good?”

Because sometimes the next level of parenting isn’t doing MORE. It’s being willing to SEE differently. 🦋

Thank you to everyone who joined us yesterday for our Parent Empowerment Circle! 💜💛

What started as a workshop became something even more valuable: real conversation, connection, validation, and community.

We talked about parenting, communication, giving ourselves credit for what we’re already doing right, and even our furry children getting into trouble. 😂🐾 Sometimes we don’t need another person telling us how to parent. Sometimes we need a safe space to talk, listen, learn from one another, and realize, “Okay, I’m not the only one navigating this!”

Now we want to hear from YOU. 🫵🏾

As Butterflies N Effect plans future parent experiences, we want to know what would actually get you to the table. What do you want to talk about? What kind of experience would make you want to attend? Your feedback will help us create opportunities that parents genuinely find valuable.

This morning, we’re having a real conversation about parenting, communication, connection, and one very important question:

You Say You Love Them… But Is It Adding Up?

No perfect parents required. No judgment. Just parents and caregivers coming together to learn, reflect, share, and strengthen the way we connect with the young people we love.

Some conversations deserve a room.

Someone asked whether “You Say You Love Them… But Is It Adding Up?” would have a virtual option.

For this particular workshop, we intentionally chose IN PERSON.

Why?

Because this isn’t designed to be a lecture where I talk at parents for 90 minutes. We’re creating a small, supportive space where parents and caregivers can talk, listen, ask questions, share experiences, laugh a little 😂, and learn from one another.

We’ll explore what happens when our intentions are loving, but the impact on our children feels very different—including communication, generational gaps, what our children actually hear, and practical ways to strengthen connection without giving up healthy boundaries.

Sometimes you need to sit next to another parent and hear:

“Wait…your child does that too?!” 😂

That moment matters.

Sometimes the people doing the most good outside the home don’t realize what may be getting missed inside the home.

As parents, providers, educators, leaders, and caregivers, we can become so committed to the mission, the work, the bills, the responsibilities, and making life better for our children that we assume they understand.

But do they?

“I’m doing this for you” and “I feel loved, seen, and connected to you” are not always the same thing.

Sometimes our children need more than our sacrifice. They need the conversation. They need the check-in. They need permission to say, “I know you’re busy, but I need you too.”

You can make an impact in the world AND remain emotionally present at home. 🦋

Don’t just assume they know. Ask. Listen. Reassure. Make room.

Today, Butterflies N Effect celebrates a board member who doesn’t just show up she helps bring everybody ELSE with her! 😂💜

As our Secretary, Reynonda is hardworking, dependable, supportive, and always willing to help keep us connected. But when there’s an outing, event, celebration or a Chicago Sky game you can pretty much count on Reynonda saying, “Who else are we inviting?” 😂🏀💙💛

That spirit of bringing people together is part of what makes her so special to our BNE family.

Sometimes the question isn’t whether we love our children—we absolutely do. The question is whether the way we’re expressing that love is the way they’re experiencing it.

🍦 More Than Ice Cream: A Lesson in Entrepreneurship 🦋

Butterflies N Effect visited Nitro Nostalgia Ice Cream & Board Game Cafe for a little community, connection, and something sweet! 🍦

But this was about more than ice cream. Our Butterflies got to see entrepreneurship in action, learn about liquid nitrogen ice cream, and experience a Black-owned Chicago business.

I also had the opportunity to sit down with owner Garland Lucas to hear his story and ask what advice he would give young people who dream of becoming entrepreneurs.

Thank you, Nitro Nostalgia, for welcoming BNE and pouring into the next generation! 💜🦋
