We Are the Village: How Stacey Brown Is Building Community in Chicago’s Englewood Neighborhood
Stacey Brown settled into our video call, pausing briefly from a day filled with caring for others to talk about her work with Baby Bibs and Bottles – We Are the Village, a grassroots nonprofit headquartered in Chicago’s Englewood neighborhood. Wearing many hats, Stacey greeted the screen with a warm, generous smile that reflected what those who know her already understand: no matter how full her plate is, she always makes time for people.
Stacey’s life of service was born from her own hardships and a deep desire to make life easier for others walking difficult paths. After experiencing the heartbreaking loss of her own infants, she felt called to ensure that new mothers never feel alone or unsupported. Through Baby Bibs and Bottles, Stacey provides essential items such as strollers, diapers, and clothing, but just as importantly, she provides hope, dignity, and connection.
“For new moms, it’s about more than supplies,” Stacey shared. “It’s about knowing someone sees you, cares about you, and wants you to succeed.”
While infants are among the most vulnerable members of the community, Stacey recognized that another group was often overlooked: seniors. In response, she began creating spaces that bring generations together through her community tea gatherings. With tea, cake, and sparkling juice, these events offer more than refreshments, they offer belonging. Neighbors who may never have met find themselves in conversation, laughter, and shared understanding.
“During COVID, we lost a lot of the everyday connections that made neighborhoods feel like family,” Stacey explained. “These gatherings help us rebuild that.”
These simple but powerful moments are quietly repairing the social fabric of the community, turning streets into neighborhoods, and neighborhoods into homes.
Behind it all is Stacey’s unwavering commitment. Alongside a small group of dedicated volunteers, she often personally covers the cost of supplies and events. Her leadership is not about recognition, but about responsibility, showing up, again and again, for those who need it most.
Stacey Brown is the heart behind Baby Bibs and Bottles – We Are the Village. Her story is a powerful example of how someone who has known hardship can transform pain into purpose, and struggle into service.
