On Friday we shipped these guides off to sail the seas of Lake of the Woods towards the Western Peninsula to navigate a network of lakes and portage trails! A trip with a smorgasbord of island paddling, bushwhacking, bogging, and tried and true portaging practice. They’re charting their own territory through the maze of lakes and labyrinth of waterways. 🗺️ 🌊 🛶 Can’t wait to hear what they saw, discovered, and learned upon their return!

Get to know your 2026 guides! 🌲

Welcome back to guiding, Katie! She is looking forward to being out in nature, and going to beautiful places on Lake of the Woods with amazing people this summer.

She’s got amazing memories from her times at Laketrails: stargazing in front of the Lodge, and portaging in the area between Chick and Rattlesnake Lakes.

She recommends that everyone coming to Laketrails this year leans into “being a kid,” goofing around, or for example, trying her favorite trail meal, Mac & Cheese Quesadillas.

She loves when the smell of campfire smoke mixes with the scent of fir trees, and as a music lover she is a big fan of the songs “Morning Has Broken” and “Far Away Islands.” And we are so happy to have her back on our Laketrails island again this year!

Get to know your 2026 guides!☀️

Carter is back for round two as a guide at Laketrails! He can’t wait to catch up with everyone returning to Laketrails this year, and to slow down and forget about all of the stresses back home.

He loves visiting Brocket Lake, the sound of frog calls, singing “Leaving on a Jet Plane,” and the taste of the first bite of a PB & Jelly Bagel for lunch on trail.

His unsolicited advice for campers (that he has learned the hard way…😅) is to ALWAYS WEAR SUNSCREEN!!

Get to know your 2026 guides! 🌾

Kailey’s joining our summer staff again! She’s looking forward to seeing returning campers from years past and introducing new campers to the magic of Laketrails, too.

She loves the smell of a tamarack bog — which is linked to one of her favorite trail memories: portaging through a bog to Loon Lake and seeing a ton of unique wetland plants. She thinks one of the best parts of being on trail is being in the moment in nature, and getting to experience things you might not be able to see elsewhere.

Favorite trail meal? Tacos! Her favorite canoe trip destination? Chappie Lake in the Aulneau Peninsula. She loves to rock climb, collect CDs, and hacky sack in her free time. Welcome back, Kailey!

Get to know your 2026 guides! 🦉

We’re welcoming Zach on staff this year! He loves coming to Laketrails to disconnect from everything and to enjoy being right where he is. (“Be here now,” anybody?!)

He loves seeing birds and calm waters, the sound and smells of food cooking over a fire (especially breakfast burittos!) and the smell of the forest.

Our guides often teach campers to “cut the fluff” and only bring the necessities on a canoe trip, but to be honest Zach loves a good nap and can’t live without his travel pillow on trail. 😴

He’s excited to meet new people and get back to nature this summer, and always recommends campers try pushing themselves out of their comfort zone!

A huge thank you is in order to this year’s Memorial Day cleanup crew!

We had a lot of fun working with current staff, alumni, future campers, and first time Laketrails visitors to wake the island up from its winter slumber.

It’s always amazing to see and feel the visible difference made by the work of this annual effort. The island is looking clean and cared for, and is humming with the joy of the Laketrails community that we all love. 🥰 Thanks to all of our volunteers for making the trek up north to help!
