🚲🎉 UNI. BI. TRI-CYCLE?! Yes, it’s PARADE time! 🎉🚲

Since 1915, the Maxwelton 4th of July Parade has brought South Whidbey together for potluck dishes, fresh-baked goods, and home-grown charm. 🥧🇺🇸 This year, a crew of local cyclists rolled right through the route on unicycles, bikes, and trikes! 🎊🚴

Pro tip for next year: skip the parking hassle — biking in is the easiest way to reach the celebration. 🚲💨

Grab your wheels (one, two, or three!) and roll into the 4th with us. 🎆

🚲 Where’s your favorite ride on Whidbey Island?

One of our team favorites: the Central Whidbey loop. Roll through historic Coupeville, stop for a snack at Greenbank Farm, catch jaw-dropping bluff views at Ebey’s Landing, and wrap it up watching herons hunt the shallows at Crockett Lake. Farmland, ferries, historic spots and forest all in one ride.

As you might know, all WA counties are required to do a 20 year plan for all aspects of county services. Island County is just completing its "Comprehensive Plan," and it contains a lot of goodness toward cycling (the catch phrase is "multimodal transportation"). However, good goals have not always resulted in great bicycle infrastructure. There is a final meeting in Coupeville to take final comments and discuss next steps. BikeWhidbey is organizing a group to attend this Wednesday's meeting (May 20, 6pm, Coupeville) to advocate for the following key items:

1. Establish a Bicycle Advisory Committee (many counties and cities have these) to include appointed public members and at least one Island County Public Works and other staff, with the goal of bringing a cyclist's perspective to the table.

2. Paved shoulders vs chipseal. Bring visibility to the situation that the in-house county program of chipsealing critical bike routes(vs applying smoother, safer asphalt) is dangerous and not conducive to stated Comp Plan goals of sustainable and healthy transportation. Cyclists avoid chip-sealed shoulders and ride in the smoother tire tracks in the car lane instead. Roads like Bayview Rd. and Bush Pt Road are key bike corridors, and solutions are needed to return the dangerously sharp and bumpy shoulders to their previous smooth surface.

3. Bridge to Boat Trail. Identify both short-term and long-term solutions to the Comp Plan goal of a Bridge to Boat separated bike lane. Prioritize sections of the proposed trail based on rider need. Find short-term solutions for any dangerous area of 525 where there is no off-highway alternative (ie widen and paint the northbound shoulder section from Bayview to Newmann Road on 525, accelerate the timeline for the Welcher to Patmore Rd project)
