SHE PROVED THE ENTIRE COUNCIL WRONG THE DAY SHE STOOD UP AND SPOKE ENGLISH
At Development Companions International, we make it a habit not only to teach, but to pause and truly listen. We follow up with our adult learners, assess their progress, and dig into the life stories that brought them to the classroom in the first place.
Among the many learners we visited was Grace, a woman whose journey reminds us why adult education matters so deeply. Grace had once lost nearly everything, her marriage, her financial stability, and her sense of worth, simply because she could not read or write. She was left alone with three children, feeling like her entire world had collapsed around her.
Grace went through season after season of heartbreak. She battled low self-esteem and faced painful judgment from those around her. But even in those dark moments, something within her refused to give up. Slowly, she lifted herself off the ground and decided to rewrite her story -literally.
Realizing that illiteracy was at the heart of many of her struggles, Grace enrolled in DCI’s adult literacy program. And that decision changed everything.
As she learned to read and write, something powerful awakened in her—strength, confidence, and a boldness she never knew she had. With every new word mastered, her world grew bigger. Her dreams stretched wider. She started to believe that she could pursue goals far beyond the limits she once knew, among which was community leadership.
Then came the moment that surprised everyone.
Today, Grace serves as the Deputy Chairperson of her village’s Local Council. During our interview, she shared with a smile,
“Most people on the council thought I was joking when I applied for the deputy LC position. They only knew me as someone who couldn’t read. But when I stood up, wrote, and spoke English, the whole room went silent. That’s when I won.”
As Grace gained confidence, life opened another unexpected door: love. Her new sense of self-worth led her to a man who saw her value immediately—a school headteacher from Bududa who not only married her in church but embraced her and her children wholeheartedly.
Back in Mbale, where Grace attends her literacy classes, her story is spreading like wildfire. The class is now overflowing with new applicants—adults who once thought it was too late for them, now inspired by the woman who proved it’s never too late to rise.
Grace’s journey is a testimony to what happens when opportunity meets determination. She reminds us that literacy does more than teach letters—it restores dignity, unlocks potential, and rebuilds lives.
