The Links, Incorporated congratulates our 2024 Global Impact Award Honoree Kemba Smith on receiving a presidential pardon today. In 1994, her 24-year drug sentence for a first-time, non-violent drug offense galvanized The Links and others who spent years advocating on her behalf. Smith’s sentence was commuted in 2000. Since her release, Smith has become a fierce advocate for incarcerated persons and survivors of domestic violence. Congratulations to Kemba Smith and all those who work to make criminal justice reform a reality.

On the fourth day of Kwanzaa, we celebrate the principle of Ujamaa (cooperative economics) which calls for us to build and maintain our own stores, shops, and other businesses and to profit from them together.

This afternoon, the West Towns (IL) Chapter of The Links, Incorporated hosted a festive Holiday Tea at the beautiful Drake Oak Brook.

Surrounded by elegance, warmth, and holiday cheer, we shared tea, laughter, and a wonderful fellowship with extraordinary women. This gathering was a perfect way to celebrate the spirit of the season and the power of friendship.

✨ Celebrating Kwanzaa with Links C.A.R.E. ✨

This month, our incredible Links C.A.R.E. Program was hosted by the Arts Facet! 🎨

The students were introduced to the beautiful holiday of Kwanzaa, learning about its rich history and the importance of its seven principles.

During our engaging story time sessions, we read the captivating "Seven Spools of Thread: A Kwanzaa Story" by Angela Shelf Medearis. 📚 We focused on the Word of the Day, "Umoja" (Unity), emphasizing the importance of togetherness and family.

The students actively participated in creative activities, and we've included some of their wonderful worksheets 🖼️

To conclude the month, our afterschool reading program participants enjoyed a special treat: fun games and a delightful story about Kwanzaa. 🎁
