Carrots & Cocktails is almost a week away, and our volunteers have been busy getting the farm ready for an incredible event.

Volunteers from our community partners – along with those lending a hand individually – have been weeding, mulching, tending to vegetable beds, and helping the farm look its best for this special evening.

We’re grateful for every person who has given their time, energy, and care to help us prepare!

On behalf of the committee, please extend a big Chicago Windy City Lions Club congratulations to our 2026 CWCLC: Sky’s the Limit Scholarship winner, Darrion, of Brother Rice High School.

During his high school career, Darrion has been a force in the classroom, in the pool and in his community.

Maintaining a 3.1 GPA and on the B Honor Roll, Darrion has successfully balanced a rigorous competition schedule with active roles in Student Council, the Diversity Club, and EA Sports. A natural leader with a reputation for resilience, respectfulness, consistency, and a "team-first" mentality. Darrion has been recognized by faculty, administration, and coaches for his professionalism and commitment to excellence.

Darrion led as captain of both the Brother Rice Men’s Varsity Water Polo and Swim Teams. Earning 1st Team selections and a coveted spot on the Midwest National Team for the Olympic Development Program (ODP). As one of the only black swimmers/water polo players on the team, Brother Rice has allowed Darrion to learn from people of many races and cultures and to feel included and welcomed in communities different from the ones he grew up in. It has shown him that no matter where you come from, or what you look like, everyone has a place.

Volunteering at such places as Universal Family Connection where he helped create a teen space, allowed him to see firsthand how targeted resources and consistent mentorship can transform the lives of young people in your community. In addition, working as a tutor to help bridge learning gaps and provide mentorship opportunities infused joy when needed most.

“You can't work for a better future if you forget the past. Use your experiences to be a better version of yourself” is one of Darrion’s life mantras.

Starting this fall, Darrion will attend Mount St. Mary's University in Maryland where he will be start his journey of pursuing a degree in Cyber Security. Reinforcing that digital literacy and security infrastructure to protect against identity theft and data breaches, is not a luxury and should be a standard for all. He will also continue his passion for water polo, by playing on Mount St. Mary’s NCAA Division 1 Men’s Water Polo Team: https://www.instagram.com/p/DT1MbrGkQEU/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link&igsh=NTc4MTIwNjQ2YQ==
Go Mountaineers!

Darrion is truly a bright light and Chicago Windy City Lions Club couldn’t be prouder to share his uplifting story.

The Chicago Windy City Lions Club was pleased to volunteer at Cradles to Crayons Chicago’s Giving Factory and bring donations for their organizations. We spent two hours bundling clothes to be given to children. With the support from our club, our members and our communities, we were also able to fill two bins with donations of clothing, diapers, wipes and backpacks to be donated!

Cradles to Crayons provides children from birth through age 12, living in homeless or low-income situations, with the essential items they need to thrive – at home, at school and at play. We supply these items free of charge by engaging and connecting communities. https://www.cradlestocrayons.org/what-we-do/our-mission-and-model/
