The mission of Recovery International is to to help individuals gain skills to lead more peaceful and productive lives. Recovery was founded in 1937 by neuropsychiatrist Dr. Abraham Low and his patients who sought to re-enter society after hospitalization, to talk about their conditions, and to eliminate the stigma of mental illness. The group was originally called “The Association of Nervous and

Former Mental Patients.” After one of their members was evicted from his rooming house because he received a letter with the Association’s return address, they decided to change the name to Recovery. The Recovery method wasn’t invented overnight—it was the result of more than 25 years of cognitive behavioral work. As the organization grew, Dr. Low realized that he needed to train others in his methods. Because he knew how overworked and understaffed many psychiatric hospitals were, he also realized the need to develop a consistent approach that could be replicated by nonprofessionals. When Dr. Low died in 1954, his widow, daughters and thousands of former patients ensured that his work continued. As the organization grew and expanded across the country and abroad, the name was changed to Recovery International.

New! Special Focus Telephone Meeting:
"Using the RI Method for Grief"
Saturdays, 7:30pm Eastern time

This meeting is like our Zoom meeting that uses the RI Method to deal with trivialities related to loss, except that it will have a different host and be through telephone instead of Zoom. The meeting begins Saturday, June 13th at 7:30 pm Eastern time and will meet weekly.

Deadline to submit: June 22nd

Summer is almost here – and coming your way is more information about RI's programs, people and presence. We are seeking your stories of hope, examples and testimonials of how the Recovery Method has helped you. We also welcome Area and Group meeting news and outreach events (with photos).

Note: If you are submitting group photos, please ensure permission for publishing is given by everyone in the photo. It is the submitter's responsibility to get permission and verify it to RI.

Submissions may be edited for length, and we may not be able to use every story due to space constraints, but we want to hear from you! From Struggle to Strength:
A Personal Declaration of Independence
Special Art Session

Across the United States, Americans are planning unique and exciting ways to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Recovery International found our own unique way to combine the Recovery Method with this celebration.

Join Elizabeth Scholder as she demonstrates how to draw curved roll of paper (or scroll) and how to hold the writing instrument to make thick and thin lines in calligraphy style writing. You will develop your own declaration of independence – from your anxiety, tension, worry, anger, fear or panic. Declare yourself “free” from those things that held you back or caused fear that you’ve overcome with the use of the Recovery tools and teachings.

Not from the USA or not an artist? No worries, join us anyway to declare your own version of independence and commemorate this historic moment in history.

Desired art materials:

Medium to heavy weight white or cream-colored drawing paper (8.5 x 11” or 11 x 14")
Black calligraphy pen – and other pen colors as desired for added decorations on the page. (Calligraphy pens can be obtained at your local craft or art store for under $10 or through Amazon.)
