This past Wednesday, we were privileged to hear from Jill Robie-Axtell, Chief Executive Director of the YMCA of Martha's Vineyard. Jill spoke about the YMCA’s exciting expansion, which will feature a nearly 40,000-square-foot, three-level Field House.

The Field House will include a multi-sport gymnasium and elevated track, expanded wellness floor, additional classroom space for camps and after school programs and studios for rehabilitation, dance and the arts.

Richard Smith, Superintendent of Martha’s Vineyard Schools, spoke to us at one of our Wednesday lunch meetings about the ongoing plans to build/refurbish the Martha's Vineyard Regional High School - MVRHS facilities. Currently, the consensus of an Island wide group (of all towns) that meets twice a month, is to combine new construction with refurbishment of some existing facilities. They feel this is the most cost effective way to go, with the least disruptive impact on students.

They are working closely with Island constituencies as well as a state program, that they hope will provide 30% or more in subsidies in order to get costs down as much as possible and be fair to all towns. The goal is to complete the project by 3031.

C. Woodbury (Woody)Bowman of the Martha’s Vineyard CROP Hunger Walk spoke at our Wednesday speaker series on October 8th. He walked us through the background of this annual event. On Martha’s Vineyard, the CROP Walk is taking place 10/19 starting at St. Augustine’s in Vineyard Haven at 1:30 PM.

The CROP Walk is sponsored nationwide by Church World Service. Its origins relate to efforts by mid-west farmers to donate food to Europe after WW2 and in 1947 these walks were initiated for funding purposes. Since then, the scope of the Crop Walk has been expanded both geographically and in other ways

Approximately 25% of the funds raised from the MV Crop Walk stay on the Island.

Rotarians and other community members can support this effort by walking on the October 19th and/or by donating.

Connect with others in your area and raise funds to fight hunger in the United States and around the world.

Last month, we were honored to hear from Karen Kasper, MD, an Emergency Room chief and substance abuse specialist, who spoke to us as part of our Wednesday speaker series.

Dr. Kasper recently received special recognition from Mass General Brigham for the work she has done at Martha’s Vineyard Hospital. She covered many programs that she and the hospital work on, in collaboration with other groups on the island. We appreciate the time she devoted to sharing her knowledge and experiences.
