The Library Friends of Oak Bluffs are collecting books in good to excellent condition on Saturday, June 6 from 11am-2pm. We welcome donations of both fiction and nonfiction for children, teens and adults. Highly prized donations include recent best sellers and books set on Martha’s Vineyard or by Vineyard authors. Your donations help us support library programming.

All books must be free of damage and/or odors. We do not accept textbooks, encyclopedias, dictionaries, Bibles or pocket-size paperbacks. Technology and medical books and travel guides must be published in the past three years. Additionally, we are not taking puzzles, games, CDs or DVDs at this time.

Books must be brought into the meeting room. Please do not leave them on the porches, in the vestibules or deposit them in the book bins intended only for library materials.

Can’t make it to the book drive? We welcome donations of 10-20 books during regular library hours and larger donations can be accommodated at a mutually agreeable time by emailing us at [email protected] with “book donations” in the subject line.

WHAT BECOMES A LEGEND MOST?

When it comes to legends, you can’t beat Tacki, a 120-million-year-old psitticosaurus dinosaur skeleton, who is the newest addition to the Oak Bluffs Library collection. We’re pretty sure Tacki won’t be packing groceries in his Stop & Shop Give Back bag, but wouldn’t be surprised to find it full of library books and videos about his fellow dinosaurs. You can meet Tacki at his welcome home party Saturday, March 28 from 10am-noon or anytime the library is open thereafter.

And if you love library programs, be sure to buy your own Give Back bag at the Edgartown Stop and Shop. Every bag purchased in March will result in a $1 donation to the Library Friends of Oak Bluffs to be spent on library programming. Tacki will be waiting for you!

What becomes a legend most?

Today’s leprechaun swapped out his pot for a Stop & Shop Give Back Bag. You’ll find the same bags at the Edgartown Stop & Shop Store. For $2.50, you get to keep the bag and S&S will donate $1 to the Library Friends of Oak Bluffs. We’ll use the money to support library programs. Everybody wind in this equation!

Deal is only good at the Edgartown store and only during March.

What becomes a legend most?

Luna Tide, local mermaid and library story teller, always makes waves when she shows up to collect seashells by the seashore with her Stop & Shop Give Back Bag. She knows that the Library Friends of Oak Bluffs gets $1 from from the Edgartown Stop & Shop for every Give Back Bag purchased in March. The Library Friends use the money raised to support more programs at the Oak Bluffs Public Library.

Be like Luna Tide and you’ll turn heads and support library programming, too.

Every month, the Stop&Shop stores choose a non-profit to benefit from their Give Back shopping bag program. The Edgartown store picked the Library Friends of Oak Bluffs to be the March charity. For every $2.50 Give Back shopping bag customers buy, the Library Friends receives $1.

The Library Friends exists solely to fund library programs at the Oak Bluffs Public Library as well as the equipment, materials and supplies required. Our small group can’t do it alone — we rely on the generosity of Islanders, both year-round and seasonal, as well as the businesses and companies across the island and have never been disappointed. Our gratitude for all the support we receive is boundless and it speaks to the love the Island has for its libraries.

We hope you’ll join in this easy way to donate. The Give Back bags are good for more than just groceries. They’re helpful in moving toys, laundry and miscellaneous household stuff to where they belong, they are a great way to tote all your paraphernalia to the beach, hold all the books you are taking home from the library (or donating the Friends), and they keep your knitting projects or craft materials all together and close at hand. They don’t rip, tear, or get soggy when wet. Goodness knows you can use more than one!

And to add the fun, take a picture of you and your bag and send it to [email protected] and you might see yourself on our social media.
