By far the best part of my trip to the Ivory Coast were the people. Ivorians are some of the friendliest most welcoming people I’ve encountered.
Now imagine this. I don’t look like them. For my entire visit, I didn’t see anyone who looked like me. Many I encountered had never seen anyone like me for real. One young lady touched my arm just to see what it felt like. Or if it was real.
I was an alien. A mysterious beast.
People stared at me. Everywhere. They didn’t even try to hide it. I had never been stared at so much. Did I get mad? Did I get offended? Did I yell at them to quit staring?
No. God opened my mind revealing to me that how I responded, how I acted, how I treated them, would be their forever lasting impression not just of me but of the entire world of people like me. It was my choice in that moment what that impact would be. No pressure at all.
So I chose to show them the same love that Jesus has shown me. Wherever I went, I returned their stare with my “Bonjour” and a smile. Most importantly, I gave them my time and attention. By doing so, I let them know they were important and mattered.
And I witnessed time and time again the stare melt into the most friendly response. A “Bonjour monsieur”. A smile. A high five. A fist bump. A friend!
I deliberately took the time to express kindness, friendliness… Jesus! In return, I was rewarded with more than I ever imagined. A lifetime of memories… and photos to prove it!
This experience reinforced something I truly believe and preach. No matter who we are, what we look like, where we are from, what language we speak, our social status, our political beliefs… we all belong to the same human race and viewed equally by God. We are all Brothers and Sisters.
Especially today, this is what our world needs more of… turning a stare into a smile! I challenge you to do that. Today!
