Historic Synagogue in Siberia Returned to Ulan-Ude Jewish Community After Nearly a Century
The historic synagogue building in Ulan-Ude, the capital of the Republic of Buryatia in southeastern Russia, has officially been returned to the local Jewish community after close to a century of use for other purposes. First opened in 1882, the synagogue was closed during the Soviet period and later served at different times as an educational facility, aviation club, and other public-use spaces. Following a lengthy effort to clarify the building’s historical ownership, documents confirmed its connection to the Jewish community, allowing the property to be restored to its rightful communal role.
