In October of 2024 Rivertown Film had a great screening of The Forgotten Occupation, at the time a work in progress about the American occupation of Haiti, 1915-1934. After hearing audience comments, filmmaker Alain Martin did some revisions and cut fifteen minutes out of it, and this year he’s been showing it to huge audiences around the country. Now it’s back in Nyack! Blending intimate memory with sweeping history, the film confronts exile, love, and the uneasy truths at the heart of freedom.

Proceeds from ticket sales will go directly to an organization supporting our local Haitian immigrant communities, which has recently come under increased threat with the Supreme Court’s ruling on Temporary Protected Status (TPS).

“Steal This Story, Please!” makes a strong case that a plurality of independent outlets and more journalists, not fewer, are vital to a healthy democracy — and that without a revitalization of the independent press, we may lose the ability to discern the truth altogether. – Alissa Wilkinson, The New York Times
