August is Make-A-Will Month, and even celebrities have estate-planning lessons to teach us.

Volunteer Financial Instructor Michael Masserant joined FOX 2 Detroit to talk about what we can learn from the estate-planning mistakes of Aretha Franklin, Prince, Marlon Brando, Michael Jackson and Heath Ledger.

Some had no will. Some relied on verbal promises. Others had estate-planning documents that weren’t properly carried out.

The takeaway is simple: Everyone needs a will, regardless of how much money they have.

Use Make-A-Will Month as your reminder to review your estate plan and make sure it reflects your wishes.

Happy 4th of July!

Today we celebrate the 250th anniversary of the United States' Declaration of Independence. On July 4, 1776, our Founding Fathers declared America an independent nation, founded on the enduring ideals of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

As we spend time with our loved ones today, we are grateful for the Founding Fathers whose vision helped shape our nation, the generations of dedicated and innovative Americans who have built it, and the servicemen and women who have faithfully defended the freedoms we enjoy.

Happy Independence Day from all of us at the Retirement Education Foundation!
