ASM Shape Memory & Superelastic Technologies

ASM Shape Memory & Superelastic Technologies SMST is dedicated to disseminating technical education on the unique class of materials which exhibi Drs. After several U.S.

Tom Duerig, Alan Pelton, and Darel Hodgson founded SMST in 1992. At the time of conception, they were attending the International Conference on Martensitic Transformations (ICOMAT), a conference that focuses on fundamental Materials Science and Engineering advancements for many advanced materials, including shape memory materials. They recognized an industry-driven desire for a conference that mor

e specifically addressed engineering aspects and applications of shape memory alloys. Thus, the three spearheaded the effort to start SMST, and the first conference was held in March 1994 at the Asilomar Conference Center in Pacific Grove, CA, USA. conferences, SMST went international in 1999. A complete history of our conferences is found below. In 2004, SMST became an Affiliate Society of ASM International, the worldwide society for materials information. The vision was for SMST to utilize ASM's administrative resources "so that our volunteers are able to spend more of their time promoting shape memory technology" said SMST founding president Tom Duerig. Over a decade in, the joint SMST-ASM association has produced many successful conferences, the launch of a new journal Shape Memory and Superelasticity, and the creation of SMST Graduate Fellowships. We are excited for the continued growth and collaboration as existing industries continue to expand and new technologies are born of shape memory and superelastic materials.

The June issue of Shape Memory and Superelasticity is a special issue in honor of the late Professor Kazuhiro Otsuka. Prof. Otsuka worked on shape memory alloys for over 50 years, and made significant contributions to the understanding of shape memory’s effect and superelasticity, together with the crystallography of martensitic transformation in various shape memory alloys. The special issue was organized by Dr. Xiaobing Ren, National Institute for Materials Science; Prof. Antoni Planes, University of Barcelona; and Dr. Avadh Saxena, Los Alamos National Lab.

This special issue is free access for you to read here now through October 31. https://www.springer.com/gp/materials/asm-journals

Register for next month's Nitinol for Medical Devices education course! The unique properties of the shape memory alloy Nitinol have led to many transformational medical device innovations, including self-expanding stents, percutaneous delivered heart valves, kink resistant guide wires, and self-locking orthopedic devices. Its superelastic qualities allow the alloy to withstand large amounts of recoverable strain, and its potential for excellent biocompatibility and fatigue resistance make it the material of choice for some of the most demanding medical device applications. However, Nitinol’s unique properties are very dependent upon alloy composition and processing.
In this course, you will learn the variables that affect Nitinol’s properties, how to control them, and how its unique properties can be applied in medical devices. Taking place both at ASM Headquarters and virtually from October 16-18, reserve your seat now! https://www.asminternational.org/nitinol-for-medical-devices-october-16-18-2023/results/-/journal_content/56/50392608/CLASS/
