Corpsmember Highlight: Emerson

Emerson is an excellent Assistant Crew Leader at the San Rafael site. He is always double checking to make sure crews have all the appropriate tools and adequate PPE to get the day started. He speaks to corpsmembers and supervisors with the utmost respect and finds ways to ensure everyone is complying with safety regulations and properly utilizing tools in a safe manner.

Emerson single handedly collects dirty gloves, puts them to wash, and then places the bucket of clean gloves in the locker room to ensure that corpsmembers have a freshly cleaned pair of gloves to start off the upcoming week.

He has proven time and time again to be reliable and ready to take on any amount of responsibility. Thanks for always being so helpful and on top of things, Emerson!

In recent weeks, a Sonoma crew worked with our friends at Daily Acts, a local educational nonprofit based in Petaluma. The crews learned how to do a process called “sheet mulching," a method used to suppress Bermuda grass
from traditional lawns by using layers of compost, cardboard, and mulch.

During those four weeks we sheet mulched four lawns at the Santa Rosa Junior College campus in Petaluma and three lawns at the Casa Grande High school campus in Petaluma.

Last month, a crew has continued working alongside Marin County Parks
Open Space District in the creation of defensible space behind homes bordering the many open spaces and preserves around the county.

They have been focusing on the removal of potential fire fuels creating a 30-50ft buffer zone behind the neighborhoods. This project has brought the crew to different preserves such as the Loma Alta preserve, Ring Mountain, Roy’s Redwoods, Sleepy Hollow Ridge, and many others.

In one of the many fire resilience project this month, a crew worked with Novato Fire a few weeks ago.

They carried out mowing and broom removal to create defensible space around the City of Novato. This work helped reduce fire fuels around homes and neighborhoods to help support wildfire prevention efforts and overall community safety.

This has been an ongoing project we have done in partnership with Novato Fire in creating the Greater Novato Shaded Fuels Break, creating defensible space around areas at high risk for wildfire.

Corpsmember Highlight: Dayana

Dayana shows a lot of initiative when she is out in the field and is always looking to take on the next task head on. She finds time out on the field to improve her skills on the tools and tries to help newer corpsmembers have a better understanding of the tool usage and day-to-day procedures. She is extremely flexible when it comes to crew assignments and is always happy to work on whatever crew she is a part of that day.

Dayana recently completed Level 3, received her Sawyer 2 certification and took part in a Native and Invasive Species Training led by a representative of the California Invasive Plant Council (CAL IPC) earlier this year. Dayana always receives high praise from her supervisors and other fellow corpsmembers, and we hope to see her take on a leadership role in the near future!

---

Our pilot program that diverts plastic wrap away from landfill and into a more circular model is going strong!

Read more about it from our partners:

"Most recycling downcycles, turning a material into something of lower value. This program does the opposite. Used stretch film collected from participating wineries is processed into post-consumer recycled resin and remanufactured into Sigma's Sustain360 film, which carries 30 percent recycled content and returns to the same wineries that generated the original material. Film becomes film, and it stays inside the same regional supply chain. The program demonstrates that post-consumer recycled content can be successfully recovered and returned to the very businesses that generated it, creating a true circular economy rather than a one-way recycling stream."
