Corpsmember Highlight: Andre L.

Andre has been with CCNB for a little over 2 years now, but he continues to develop and refine his professionalism, leadership skills, and overall
job-related skills. Andre has held an Assistant Crew Leader role with the Marin Zero Waste team for a little over a year now, and he has been a pivotal player in our daily operations. He has good command over the crew, effective communication, and a keen eye to detail with projects he gets assigned, all while maintaining a respectful and calm demeanor. In the past few months, Andre gained a few more certificates to bolster his already impressive resume. Those certificates specifically are Forklift Operator 50 (50 hours of safe forklift experience), Rim Remover Equipment Operator, and Baler Operator.

We are excited to see where these skills will take him in the future. Congrats, Andre.

Andre lleva poco más de dos años en CCNB, tiempo durante el cual ha seguido desarrollando y perfeccionando su profesionalismo, sus habilidades de liderazgo y sus competencias laborales en general. Desde hace algo más de un año, desempeña el cargo de asistente de jefe de cuadrilla en el equipo de Marin Zero Waste, donde ha desempeñado un papel fundamental en nuestras operaciones diarias. Demuestra un buen manejo del equipo, una comunicación eficaz y una gran atención al detalle en los proyectos que se le asignan, todo ello manteniendo siempre una actitud respetuosa y serena. For the third spring in a row, NRC Sonoma has partnered with the Town of Windsor to assist their public works team in executing aggressive vegetation management throughout the town.

Corpsmembers have been working in local parks, along roadways, and near public spaces to reduce the wildfire risks to the immediate communities abutting these vegetation zones.

Shout-out to corpsmembers for executing this project through dust and pollen!

Por tercera primavera consecutiva, NRC Sonoma se ha asociado con el municipio de Windsor para apoyar a su equipo de obras públicas en la ejecución de un plan intensivo de gestión de vegetación en toda la localidad.

Los corpsmembers de trabajo han estado operando en parques locales, a lo largo de las carreteras y cerca de espacios públicos con el fin de reducir el riesgo de incendios forestales para las comunidades situadas junto a estas zonas de vegetación.

Corpsmember Highlight: Alex N.

Alex brings an infectious positive attitude, strong work ethic, and attention to detail every day. Alex has held the ACL title on Zero Waste’s Santa Rosa team for approximately 6 months and is continuously developing his leadership skills.

Alex has earned several certifications, including Rim Remover Equipment Operator, Baler Operator, and notably, a Forklift Operator 100 certification. Corpsmembers have to complete 100 hours of safe forklift experience to gain this certification, so only a few have been awarded in recent years. Truly a Zero Waste rockstar.

Alex aporta cada día una actitud positiva contagiosa, una gran ética de trabajo y atención a los detalles. Ha ocupado el puesto de ACL en el equipo de Zero Waste en Santa Rosa durante aproximadamente seis meses y sigue desarrollando continuamente sus habilidades de liderazgo.

Alex ha obtenido varias certificaciones, entre ellas las de operador de equipos de extracción de llantas (Rim Remover) y operador de prensas enfardadoras, destacando especialmente la certificación de operador de montacargas de nivel 100. Para obtener esta última, los corpsmembers deben completar 100 horas de experiencia segura en el manejo de montacargas, por lo que muy pocos la han conseguido en los últimos años. Sin duda, una verdadera estrella del equipo Zero Waste.

Last month, corpsmembers worked on a project in Ring Mountain, the home of a local endangered species.

A San Rafael crew worked with the Ring Mountain HOA out at Ring Mountain Open Space Preserve in Tiburon with the project mainly focusing on drain clearance and fire fuel reduction. Equipped with brush cutters and leaf blowers, the crew worked all along the edges and cut large swaths of dry grass and other dry plant material to create defensible space for the homeowners of Tiburon. The crew also helped clear drainages and V ditches which helps prevent any potential flooding in the neighborhood.

Ring Mountain Open Space Preserve is one of the most ecologically diverse places in the Bay Area and is home to the Tiburon Mariposa Lily (Calochortus tiburonensis), which cannot be found anywhere else in the world. There is also evidence of indigenous occupancy at the preserve: 30 or so boulders located throughout Ring Mountain display petroglyphs believed to have been created over 2400 years ago by the Coastal Miwok, who have called Marin County home for thousands of years.

Did you know that oyster shells can be diverted away from landfills and back to shorelines to create habitats?

Our Zero Waste department has begun a pilot program with the help of local partners:

“CCNB’s Zero Waste team is running a pilot program that establishes a weekly oyster shell recovery and redistribution route, taking waste from Hog Island Oyster Co., the largest source of shell in the region, and delivering it to the Estuary and Ocean Science Center to cure. Once cured, these shells are used in Olympia Oyster Restoration and Living Shoreline Projects throughout the San Francisco Bay Area, aimed to help revitalize the shores. Oyster shell reefs help with erosion and create habitats for local fauna.”

Nuestro departamento de "Cero Desechos" (Zero Waste) ha puesto en marcha un programa piloto con la colaboración de socios locales:

"El equipo de Cero Desechos de CCNB está llevando a cabo un programa piloto que establece una ruta semanal de recuperación y redistribución de conchas de ostra; se recogen los residuos de Hog Island Oyster Co., la mayor fuente de conchas de la región, y se trasladan al Estuary and Ocean Science Center para su curado. Una vez curadas, estas conchas se utilizan en proyectos de restauración de la ostra Olympia y de creación de costas vivas en toda el área de la Bahía de San Francisco, con el objetivo de revitalizar el litoral. Los arrecifes de conchas de ostra ayudan a combatir la erosión y crean hábitats para la fauna local".

It’s summer newsletter week!

Copies of our Summer 2026 CORPSrespondence are on their way to mailboxes. Here’s an excerpt from our story on a fire fuel reduction project at Bartholomew Park in Sonoma County:

“A keystone aspect of this project was the opportunity for corpsmembers to burn piles they created a year earlier during the summer. Although crews often participate in both pile making and burning, it is rare for them to do both in the same project. This full-circle experience reinforced a sense of ownership and pride in their work. ‘We participate in the project from start to finish, and corpsmembers benefit by learning about how all phases of work impact the environment,’ said Joshua, Natural Resources Coordinator.”

"Un aspecto fundamental de este proyecto fue la oportunidad que tuvieron los miembros del cuerpo de quemar las pilas que ellos mismos habían formado un año antes, durante el verano. Si bien los equipos suelen participar tanto en la formación de las pilas como en su quema, es poco común que realicen ambas tareas dentro de un mismo proyecto. Esta experiencia de ciclo completo reforzó su sentido de pertenencia y el orgullo por su trabajo. 'Participamos en el proyecto de principio a fin, y los miembros del cuerpo se benefician al aprender cómo todas las fases del trabajo repercuten en el medio ambiente', comentó Joshua, Coordinador de Recursos Naturales".

Did You Know? 💡

Our recycling collection route for wineries keeps growing!

Since we started this program in late 2024, the team has collected a total of a quarter million pounds of wine bottle glass and 100,000 pounds of cardboard and plastic wrap. What started out with about a dozen wineries, has since blown up to over 30 wineries….and counting! These locations vary from here locally in Sonoma County all the way into Napa County.

Corpsmember Highlight: Nataly E.

Nataly contributed heavily to the success of our Cal Trans crew; her supervisor Chris spoke highly of her work ethic and her skills with the brush cutter. Supervisors are always appreciative of Nataly’s respectful attitude towards her fellow corpsmembers and her commitment to giving each project her best. Nataly is always on time, calm, and ready to help any crew that she is a part of. Nataly started off a little timid but learned quickly and grew into a corpsmember her colleagues look up to as an example.

Great job, Nataly!

Nataly contribuyó enormemente al éxito de nuestro equipo de Cal Trans; su supervisor, Chris, elogió su ética de trabajo y su destreza en el manejo de la desbrozadora. A CCNB Natural resources crew continued work with the Marin County Parks district as the trails mowing project began. This project requires the crew to hike trails all over Marin to open the trail corridor by brushing the grass and removing any fallen trees that may impede hikers. In the three weeks since the project started the crew has managed to cover dozens of miles of trails & reduce fire risk across the county!

Corpsmembers learn pressing knowledge about fire resilience, get practice hours with tools, and strengthen their profiles for future careers.

Un equipo de Recursos Naturales del CCNB continuó trabajando en colaboración con el Distrito de Parques del Condado de Marin, coincidiendo con el inicio del proyecto de desbroce de senderos. Este proyecto exige que el equipo recorra a pie senderos por todo el condado de Marin para despejar el corredor de paso, retirando la vegetación y eliminando cualquier árbol caído que pueda obstaculizar el paso de los visitantes. ¡En las tres semanas transcurridas desde el inicio del proyecto, el equipo ha logrado cubrir decenas de millas de senderos y reducir el riesgo de incendios en todo el condado!

Los corpsmembers adquieren conocimientos fundamentales sobre la resiliencia ante incendios, acumulan horas de práctica en el manejo de herramientas y fortalecen sus perfiles profesionales de cara a futuras carreras.

From the start of February until late April, NRC Crews have gone out to Taylor Mountain Regional Park and hand pulled invasive French.

Crews went throughout the Cooper Ridge Addition in the northeastern section of the park and tried to make an impact on the broom infestation. Removing broom in areas like this is a primary function of habitat restoration known as Early Detection Rapid Response (EDRR).

Corpsmembers have also gotten a chance to learn about beneficial native plants in the area. Corpsmembers have learned about how broom can impact native plants and how it doesn’t let many other plants succeed.

Not an easy task, corpsmembers hiked upward of 8 miles some days!

Desde principios de febrero hasta finales de abril, los equipos del NRC han acudido al Parque Regional Taylor Mountain para arrancar manualmente la retama invasora.

Los equipos recorrieron la zona de Cooper Ridge Addition, situada en la sección noreste del parque, con el objetivo de mitigar la infestación de retama. La eliminación de esta planta en áreas como esta constituye una función primordial de la restauración de hábitats, conocida como Detección Temprana y Respuesta Rápida (EDRR, por sus siglas en inglés).

Asimismo, los corpsmembers han tenido la oportunidad de aprender sobre las plantas nativas beneficiosas que se encuentran en las zonas de las que retiramos la retama. Han aprendido cómo esta planta puede afectar a la vegetación nativa y de qué manera impide que muchas otras especies prosperen.

¡No ha sido una tarea fácil; algunos días, los miembros del cuerpo llegaron a caminar más de 8 millas!
