In grateful memory of Laura Lovett 🌼
Refugia Marin held a memorial Saturday for local native plant advocate Laura Lovett. As the Marin head of the California Native Plant Society, Laura helped establish several habitats around Marin. She created the garden in front of the Central Marin Police Station, which Refugia has committed to take over managing in her honor.
Surprisingly, Laura only took up native landscaping about 10 years ago. She had a significant career as a graphic designer, including many years at Chronicle Books where she helped produce more than 1,000 books.
Laura lent her artistic talents to all of the organizations she worked with, including LCF. Our board member and seven-time former mayor of Larkspur, Joan Lundstrom, remembers the impact of Laura’s service:
“Laura was one of Larkspur’s ‘unsung’ volunteers who made our city bloom. LCF granted her funds many times over the years to beautify our public spaces, including planting gardens near the police station and the Lark Theater. She also lent her expertise to LCF when we relandscaped the Downtown Parking Lot and most recently when we planted poppy seeds in the median by Mt. Tam Racquet Club last fall and helped us w**d all winter.
Laura was a dedicated gardener who worked continuously to keep our town’s gardens growing. Let’s keep on w**ding in her memory.”
So when you pass the beautiful beds of blooms around town this spring, remember Laura and her inspiring dedication and service. And feel free to grab a w**d or two in her honor. 🌼
