Researchers from the Pulte Institute traveled to Malawi and the Philippines over the summer months for the start of new work to improve global food security and strengthen agricultural sustainability. Drs. Shriniwas Gautaum and Lila Khatiwada are leading impact evaluations that examine 20 years of data collected in the two countries on innovations in seed systems, irrigation, extension services, and climate adaptation to identify the most effective among them. Future findings, funded by two awards from the CGIAR Standing Panel on Impact Assessment (SPIA), will offer insights to inform policy and support human well-being at scale.

Poverty and ineffective state institutions contributed to an environment in the Middle East where women and girls were more vulnerable to exploitation. Through research and interviews with Iraqi women and activists, Keough School of Global Affairs, University of Notre Dame expert David Cortright and Pulte Institute Research Associate Anna Romandash discovered that support of a legal framework to address violence against women combined with targeted support for social and economic opportunity offers hope for advancing gender equality and promoting human rights.
