Kyra Kopestonsky will read her work at Stories & Poems Norwood Aug. 20th

NORWOOD ... Long-time gypsy local Kyra Kopestonsky, poet and musician, will be the featured guest of Stories & Poems at the Lone Cone Library on Wed. Aug.20 at 6 pm (MST).

“Kyra has been a regular at Talking Gourds events for the past couple years,” said Art Goodtimes, Talking Gourds director. “Both as a poet and as a musician.”

She’s done stints playing piano on demand at the Peaks Hotel bar in the Mountain Village. She’s had a very close encounter with a mountain lion, that made national news. For several years, when living downvalley, she had a poetry jar posted near the highway at Fall Creek that locals would exchange poems in.

She describes herself as “a musician (piano, cello, harmonica, etc.), wildlife artist, poet, goat-herder, pet-sitter, and organic gardener who has also drawn scientific illustrations of insect genitalia. Nature and animals are my biggest teachers. I’ve camped and hiked extensively throughout the West, engaging in conversation with the animals, plants, and rocks. I’m currently coexisting with stage four cancer.”

For those who like prompts for stories or poems, this month’s prompt is: “Animals.”

The Stories & Poems free series happens on the third Wednesday of each month. Our featured guest will give a 30-40 min. presentation, followed by a short question and answer period after the presentation. Then there’s a passing of the gourd, where community members in attendance are encouraged to share stories or poems.

A collaboration of the Lone Cone Library and the Telluride Institute’s Talking Gourds poetry program, Stories & Poems Norwood is free and open to all ages, thanks to the generosity of the library, a Town of Telluride CCAASE grant, private donors and Talking Gourds’ Fischer and Cantor poetry contests.

Both the Fischer and Cantor contests are currently open for submissions.

For more information on poetry contests and Talking Gourds programs, visit the website www.tellurideinstitute.org/talking-gourds. For questions about the event, text 970-729-0220 or email Goodtimes at [email protected]

Evacuations have been ordered for Stoner and Taylor Mesas on the San Juan National Forest

DOLORES, Colo., Aug. 5, 2025 —Firefighters responded this afternoon to the Stoner Mesa Fire, burning roughly 20 miles northeast of Dolores and west of Rico, CO. The fire, currently estimated at 250-300 acres, is exhibiting extreme fire behavior, and is growing to the east. The fire has not reached Stoner Creek at this time.
