COMMUNITY INFORMATION SESSION: LICENSE PLATE READER TECHNOLOGY and CAMERAS
The Norwood Police Department will be hosting a Community Information Session to discuss our use of Flock Safety cameras and License Plate Reader (LPR) technology.
We recognize that there has been significant public discussion surrounding this technology, including questions about privacy, data retention, information sharing, and how law enforcement agencies use LPR systems.
We believe the best way to address these questions is openly and directly.
During this meeting, the Police Department will provide a presentation explaining:
• What Flock and LPR technology is — and what it is not
• Why the Norwood Police Department uses this technology
• How the cameras have assisted in criminal investigations and public safety
• What information is collected
• How long information is retained
• Who can access the system and how that access is monitored
• Restrictions on sharing and use of Norwood's data
• Department policies and safeguards designed to prevent misuse
Following the presentation, we will hold an open Question & Answer session so residents can ask questions directly and raise any concerns they may have.
Our goal is not simply to tell residents that this technology is useful, we want the community to understand how it works, how we use it, what protections are in place, and why we believe transparency and accountability are important whenever technology is used in public safety.
