In June 2024, at just 26 years old, Josey Wooderson Scholtz was diagnosed with triple negative breast cancer. She had gone in for a routine surgery to remove a benign mass and was met with the devastating news that there was also cancer involvement. What followed was IVF, a double mastectomy, and chemotherapy. Shortly after her diagnosis, Josey learned she was BRCA1 positive.

This discovery prompted family testing, and what the family learned next was unimaginable. Josey's sister Jordan and their father were also BRCA1 positive. Their team at KU Med took quick action and began high risk screenings for Jordan immediately. During her very first screening, just four months after Josey finished treatment, Jordan, also 26, was diagnosed with triple negative breast cancer. She underwent IVF, chemotherapy, a double mastectomy, and immunotherapy.

To this day, it is still hard to put into words what happened in those two years. The sisters navigated the unimaginable, making life altering decisions at only 26 years old. But that did not hold them back from living. Throughout most of their chemotherapy appointments, they helped each other plan their weddings. Just two weeks after finishing chemotherapy, Jordan had her wedding as planned in October 2025, with Josey's wedding following in April 2026.

Both sisters credit their family and their medical team at KU Med for being so proactive and caring for them in the way they have. While they continue to navigate the lifelong experience of a cancer diagnosis, they now carry a different perspective and a deeper appreciation for life. They encourage others to be proactive about their health, advocate for themselves, and get to know their family history.

Every TNBC journey is different. We are honored to share Josey and Jordan's πŸ’œ

Representation in triple negative breast cancer research and care matters deeply to us πŸ’œ

Triple negative breast cancer accounts for approximately 20% to 35% of all breast cancer diagnoses among Black women in the United States, a rate roughly double that of white women, and too often diagnosed at younger ages and later stages.

Black women deserve a space that is specifically built for them. That is why we created the Black TNBC Sanctuary, a dedicated community for Black women impacted by triple negative breast cancer, where they can find support, connection, and resources tailored to their experience. Visit blacktnbcsanctuary.org to learn more πŸ”—

Awareness is growing, research is expanding, and the TNBC community is advocating for change every single day. We are committed to ensuring that every person impacted by TNBC, regardless of background, has access to the information, support, and resources they deserve. Progress is being made, and every step forward matters.

Katie was diagnosed with triple negative breast cancer on July 1, 2020, after finding a lump while showering. At just 36, with a two year old and a four year old at home, she was terrified that she would not live long enough for her children to remember her.

At her initial scans, the radiologist told Katie the mammogram did not show anything, but the ultrasound showed a small lump. He told her there was no rush to biopsy since she had no family history of breast cancer. Katie disagreed, and quickly booked the biopsy herself, which ultimately confirmed Stage 1, Grade 3 triple negative breast cancer.

After a lumpectomy, chemotherapy, and radiation, Katie was declared no evidence of disease. Now, six years later, she is grateful to her younger self for trusting her intuition. She has finished a marathon, celebrated her 40th birthday with morning coffee at the Grand Canyon, and most importantly, had the opportunity to watch her children grow.

Every TNBC journey is different. We are honored to share Katie's πŸ’œ

"Do not be afraid to advocate for yourself. Listen to your gut, ask all of the questions, and don't worry about making anyone mad. This is your life and you deserve to keep living it." β€” Katie Dunn
