May 17th kicks off EMS week and we would be remiss if we didn't recognize the many men and women who provide EMS all across the County. These dedicated men and women give up countless hours away from their family to attend to Medical related calls in their home jurisdictions. These brave and dedicated personnel respond to assist the sick and injured people in a moment's notice. The theme of this year's EMS week is "Improving Outcomes, Together". This is very evident where our teams of EMS providers work together seamlessly, assisting each other on calls, every single day. Together we work in the best interest of Patient Care. To our OES - EMS staff of BLS and ALS providers, we have come a long way together and we could not be any prouder of the accomplishments each of you have achieved. Some have just joined our excellent team and we are glad you have joined with us. Others are expanding their training and have enrolled in the Paramedic Class. To each and everyone of you, we THANK YOU. Your commitment, dedication and professionalism does not go, unnoticed. This week, we not only honor the OES staff, but all of the EMS Professionals across the County!

There has been a lot of conversation about pending legislation in NYS that would allow the AHJ to nominally compensate first responders. This currently cannot be done in NYS because of VFBL and LOSAP laws. Unfortunately, there has been a great deal of misinformation and misunderstanding about what a...

On March 18, 2026, the Office of Emergency Services had a wonderful family visit their Headquarters to express their sincere gratitude to Paramedic Kally Haskell. On August 11, 2025, AEMT-Paramedic Kally Haskell was working in one of our ALS Medic Cars (Medic 2), assigned to the southern portion of the County. At 2:12PM, Coventry EMS, Greene EMS, Inc. and Chenango County OES, Medic 2, were dispatched to 222 Stiles Road in the Town of Coventry for a maternity call. A short time later, both Greene EMS and Chenango County OES Medic 2 arrived to find Angelica Balison in labor and ready to give birth to their expected new baby BOY. Both agencies worked together quickly and loaded Angelica into Greene’s Ambulance and began transport to Wilson Hospital. AEMT Paramedic Haskell worked together with Greene EMS personnel in the back of the Ambulance and a short time later, Angelica gave birth to a beautiful baby GIRL! YES, BABY GIRL! Paramedic Haskell commented that "You should have seen the look on Mom's face when I told her it was a GIRL!" Both Mom and Dad were told throughout the pregnancy, to expect a baby BOY. "The look on Angelica's (Mom) face was of total shock and surprise!" Greene EMS continued the transport to Wilson Hospital while Paramedic Haskell and Greene EMT’s continued caring for both Angelica and their newly born baby Girl. Upon arrival at Wilson Hospital, the crew immediately met with ER staff that began the evaluation of both mom and their new addition to the family! It’s not very often that EMS crews get the experience to deliver a new baby into the world, but with both agencies working together, these outstanding providers did just that! A short time after AEMT-P Haskell reached out to the family to see how their new baby was doing. At that time, the family announced they had named their beautiful baby girl, Kallista “Kallie” Smith in honor of Paramedic Haskell. On March 18th, the entire family met with OES’s administration and Paramedic Haskell, so she could officially introduce and hold Kallista AKA Kallie.

Everyday, EMS providers respond to calls for help. Often, answering calls are challenging both physically and mentally on the crew(s). Some even end with non-favorable results. But on August 11th, 2025 and on March 18, 2026, all those memories fade off, and we get time to enjoy those wonderful moments when we get to bring a new life into this world. It’s times like this, when all those long days, countless hours of training, nights with no sleep, all PAY OFF!

Congratulations to Chenango County OES Paramedic Haskell and Greene EMS on their cooperative professional working relationship and bringing the Smith family a new baby Girl! AND we also found out Angelica is pregnant again with their 4th child. Both Mom and Dad hope, that if they need to, these crew members can be there for them again. Congratulations!!!

The combination of dry fine fuels, southerly wind gusts of to 20 to 30 mph, and relative humidity values as low as 20 to 35 percent will contribute to an elevated risk for fire spread on Thursday for portions of Central New York. The annual statewide burn ban is in effect until May 14. No burn permits are issued.
