Calkins Family Association Calkins Family Association, Inc. We are a 501(c)(3) non-profit, family history organization. Richard Blinman, embarked and came to America, about 1640.

Our mission: to use the stories of the past to inspire modern people to strive to produce good for the future. Hugh Calkins was a radical, in religion a non-conformist, and living in the troublous times of Charles, the First, soon became satisfied that there were safer countries than England and Wales—for men who wished to worship God according to the dictates of their own consciences. Accordingly, he with his wife, Ann, and children: Sarah, Mary, Rebecca, John, and David, joined a body of emigrants called the 'Welch Company,' and with their pastor, Rev.

2026 “Tell Your Family Story” Essay Winner: Jeffery Allen Record for
“A Misplaced Angel: How a Widow’s Deed Restored a Mayflower Line”

Jeffery had been hot on the trail of a Mayflower line to his ancestor John Howland, when, after perusing the Silver Books and comparing what was “not said” about Mary Angel there, alongside what was said about her in some of the older published genealogies, and against what was said about her in History of Montville, he knew, as any genealogist does, that he had a “misplaced Angel.” And, like any other “armchair” genealogist, Jeffery knew he could never leave it alone.

The case he built rests on an 1801 New London County land transfer in which Mary, by then a widow, refers to her “Beloved Husband, Jonathan Church;” an earlier 1765 deed between William Angel and Jonathan Church, Jr., witnessed by Church family members; and other sources argue that Mary Angel married Jonathan Church, Jr., of Montville, Connecticut, not Jonathan Comstock, and that the Silver Books’ long-unresolved footnote on the matter can now be closed.

Jeffery is grateful to the Connecticut Society of Genealogists for this recognition and he hopes readers of “A Misplaced Angel” take away the same lesson he did: a genealogy’s silence on a point, is often as telling as what it chooses to print, and always worth chasing down.

👏Congratulations to Jeffery!
