What's in YOUR Watershed?

A watershed (also called a drainage basin) includes the land that drains into a waterbody, like a stream, lake, river and eventually the ocean. As rain water or snow melt drains across the land, it picks up and carries with it various substances, referred to as “nonpoint source pollution”, such as fertilizers, animal waste, oils, grease, trash, and soil. These pollutants can affect the health of fish and other aquatic life and also impair water used for drinking and recreation. The key is to prevent these pollutants from entering our streams and rivers. Forests, vegetated buffers and wetlands can slow down precipitation that flows over the land and intercept these pollutants, giving natural biological processes a chance to break them down and sequester them. Residents can also help by reducing the size of lawns and use of fertilizers, avoiding use of pesticides, picking up after pets, using rain barrels, and keeping your septic system working properly.
