A Pure Soul

Father McGivney possessed to a heroic degree many outstanding virtues and qualities that make him worthy as a model for our lives and an intercessor for our needs. A fellow priest praised his “indomitable will” in carrying out difficult tasks, yet Father McGivney was also known for his sense of humor, welcoming demeanor, and preaching that attracted even non-Catholics to St. Mary’s Church.

One of the more touching moments of his priesthood came in January 1881, when he offered a Requiem Mass for a woman he had visited often during her illness. In his eulogy, Father McGivney said the woman was one of the purest souls he had ever known and that he hoped to be as well prepared for death as she was when his time came.

His expression of heartfelt sentiments for the deceased along with a gentle warning to all about the need to prepare for death was typical of this strong, compassionate priest. In this new year, we do well to take his words to heart. Toward this end, in our 2026 monthly emails, we will explore the virtuous character of Father McGivney and seek to draw closer to him in prayer and action.

Video: ‘Reverence for the Human Person’

Father Gabriel O’Donnell, director of the Father McGivney Guild, calls Father McGivney a unique figure in the Church in America whose priestly heart focused on “reverence for the human person, the dignity of human work, and the sacredness of marriage and the family.”

Watch the first five minutes of Father O’Donnell’s address, given the evening before Father McGivney’s beatification ceremony.

A Blessed and Happy New Year!
Today marks the last day of the Christmas octave and the Solemnity of Mary, the Most Holy Mother of God.

Prayer for the Solemnity:
Father, source of light in every age, the virgin conceived and bore your Son who is called Wonderful God, Prince of Peace. May her prayer, the gift of a mother’s love, be your people’s joy through all ages. May her response, born of a humable heart, draw your Spirit to rest on your people. Grant this through Christ our Lord.
Amen.

“Mary kept all these things, reflecting on them in her heart.” (Luke 2:19)
On this first day of the new year, the Church lifts our eyes to Mary, Mother of God, the woman who carried Christ into the world and who continues to carry each of us in her motherly care.
Her quiet courage, her steadfast faith, and her willingness to surrender to God’s plan remind us how to begin our own year: with trust, humility, and hope.
As we enter 2026, may Mary guide our families, protect our parishes, and draw us ever closer to her Son.
🙏 Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us.

Wraz z nadejściem 2026 roku niechaj Maryja prowadzi nasze rodziny, chroni nasze parafie i przybliża nas coraz bardziej do swojego Syna.

Wishing everyone a Happy New Year & a Blessed Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God!

“O God, who through the fruitful virginity of Blessed Mary bestowed on the human race the grace of eternal salvation, grant, we pray, that we may experience the intercession of her, through whom we were found worthy to receive the author of life, our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son. Who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, for ever and ever.” (Collect Prayer of the Mass for the Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God)

We have made some additions to our website that better explain all of the activities we do in the name of the Lord. Go to https://www.kofc-council13.org/ for all of the information:

One thing you can count on: the Knights of Norwich are busy. Here is just a partial list of what we do to serve God by serving others and to build up His Body, which is the Church:

Monthly breakfasts to raise money for our charities.

Ham and Bean Dinner to help our Haitian Ministry

Give a scholarship for Catholic students entering college

Sponsor a Poster Contest for Kids.

Raise money for Coats for Kids.

Take care of the physical grounds of Sacred Heart and St. John Mission.

Host the Sacred Heart of Jesus icon.

Host the Silver Rose, praying for an end to abortion.

Support the 40 Days for Life protests.

And we even have a Christmas Party at the end of it all, just to have a little fun.

What is even more surprising is that I haven't even listed everything we do. But you get the point: If you want to make a difference in this world by doing the work that God commands us to do, then this is the place to you. Just contact Chris at [email protected] to find out more.

And to sign up, go to kofc.org. It's free to join, and ask for Council #13 on your form.

We are a Catholic Men's organization, part of the Knights of Columbus. We are Council #13, based at Sacred Heart Church in Norwich, CT, one of the first Councils of the largest men's Catholic Service organization in the world. We strive to serve God, HIs Church, and our community in everything we do...
