Resilient Communities Restoring the Earth
(1)

CEBE's mission is to engage the community in addressing the climate emergency. We organize, educate, take direct action, and implement practical, ecological solutions for a just transition to a thriving, regenerative economy. Help Us Build a Local Movement
Whether we choose to or not, Western Maine will eventually become part of a post-fossil fuel economy faced with the challenges of an increasing

ly unstable climate. We can, however choose to plan now, while resources are available, to transition to a more resilient and ecology based economy that provides for our perennial needs and celebrates the strength of our communities. Join the Center for an Ecology-Based Economy to realize the dream of healthy and sustainable communities and resilience to climate and resource instability. Only by working together and celebrating our diversity and collective knowledge, will we achieve our greatest potential as a community and thrive well into the future.

Overalls we’re focused on climate justice, but if you dungaree that climate change is affecting us, then maybe we can find some common ground around saving money by not heating the outside or paying your power company more than you need to😁

Got questions about batteries? Want to learn more about backup power and how to determine how much you need? Join us for our next Energy Café on June 11 where we’ll answer your energy storage questions, or go looking for answers together! Plus, visit with Bilbo Pluggins AKA Pluggy, our plug-in solar unit, if you haven't yet met him. We'll have some food to share, and feel free to bring your dinner.

🎉Congrats to our western Maine recipients of the most recent round of state Community Action Grants! These projects will help us be better prepared for extreme weather; save us money so we’re not heating the outdoors; and protect the natural surroundings we love.

We helped Brownfield write their first grant for $74,000 to conduct municipal building energy audits and efficiency upgrades, and we also helped Sweden with their first $66,300 grant for municipal solar and natural resource inventory. Some of the towns we helped enroll in previous rounds have continued to write grants for additional projects: Bethel got their second grant for for town office weatherization and heat pump installation; Canton got their second grant for geotechnical shoreline evaluation and engineering for slope reconstruction on River Road; Stoneham got their third grant to upgrade their most vulnerable culverts and ditches; West Paris got their second grant for an energy audit and weatherization of the town office; and Otisfield got their fourth grant to modernize their municipal buildings.

Pictured: solar on the Hartford town hall, funded in 2023; upgraded windows in Hanover, funded in 2024; and solar on the Norway town office, funded in 2024.

Thanks to our Food Working Group volunteers for building new garden beds for Edible Main Street! The old ones were retired to Alan Day Community Garden after a long life on Main Street. The more things change, the more they stay the same - swipe the last slide to see some of our community members demonstrating that climbing in planter boxes was just as irresistible over a decade ago as it is now!

TrikeShare!! With several requests from community elders, we expanded our Community BikeShare to include a three-wheeler. Octogenarian Kim was thrilled to be riding again, and ready to do errands around town. It's never too late for pedal power, and remember to keep an eye out for pedestrians and cyclists when driving🚴🏾‍♀️🚴🏿🚴🏿‍♀️

Stop by the Center to sign up for the program if you'd like to borrow our community bikes or trike!
