Norway Baseball Association

Norway Baseball Association Focused on the maintenance and preservation of the Norway baseball diamond and the history it holds. Townsfolk showed up for every game to fill the bleachers.

"In July of 2015 the Norway Baseball Association was established to assist the City of Norway and the Norway Bandits baseball team in maintaining and improving our famous ball field. (Benton Community School District transferred the property title to the city in July, 2015.)"

The town acquiring the field meant that the diamond was back in the hands of the people who lived and breathed Norway base

ball. However, it also meant a lot of small town people were faced with big issues, with everything from maintenance to financial burdens with a lot in between. With several members and a board of directors who meet monthly, the NBA is determined to keep the Norway baseball tradition alive on the very field it belongs on. This diamond wasn't just the home of the Norway Tigers; even though it resides on the edge of Norway, it used to be the centerpiece of this quiet railroad town. Kids showed up with no invites needed to play ball for hours. Also during all of this, starting back in the early 1900's, the Norway baseball townteams have played here with a story of their own. Now known as the Norway Bandits, this team is currently coached by and includes Norway born and raised ball players. Even many players who had never heard of Norway before playing for this team, learn about the tradition and buy into it, adding their own mark to the story. Norway baseball as we knew it is gone, but here's the next part of the story. Now you can be a part of it. Help keep Norway baseball going by liking this page and spreading the word. The 2025 Norway Baseball Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony will be 2:00 Sat, Aug 23 at the Norway Ballpark. New inductees are Jerry Meredith and Steve Stumpff. Arrive early for free hot dogs and other concessions at noon. ⚾️

This past Friday I had the honor and privilege to be the guest speaker at the Norway Iowa Baseball Association annual banquet and fundraiser. It was definitely one of the most memorable experiences in my baseball career. During the day I had an opportunity to tour the original baseball field in Norway. Later in the day I was given a private tour of the Norway Baseball Museum by curator of the museum Shana Frese. It is an amazing display of baseball history and Norway baseball program's success.
Norway High School baseball program set the standard for success between 1965-1991 by winning 20 state baseball titles. The program has also produced 4 major league players, 17 minor league players and numerous top notch college players during their storied history. The team garnered national recognition during their amazing run and world wide publicity with the release of the movie "The Final Season" depicting the 1991 teams run to their 20th state championship.
The evening in Norway was made even more memorable for me, when 6 of my former players; Greg Broyles, Dan Huss, Brian Dorian, Dan Marcus, Brian Van Pelt and Aric Becker attended the event. They were joined by three of my dear friends from Creston; Tracey Evans, Lyndsay Stumpff and Kim North Mullin.
I will always be grateful to Aric Becker and the Norway Baseball Association for the opportunity to be part of their efforts to keep baseball a vital part of this great community.
This weekend I am going back to Creston, Iowa to speak at the Southwestern Community College Baseball "First Pitch Dinner" on February 4,2023.
