Outright Oxford County!
Outright/Lewiston-Auburn started with a group of young people and adults who came together in 1996 to form an organization where LGBTQ+ and allied young people could find support and community.
Back when we started, finding q***r resources often entailed a fair amount of stealth activities: knowing someone who knew the right school counselor, or noticing something interesting in the reading suggestions of one brave staffer at a local bookstore. While things have changed and information for LGTBQ+ people is way more readily available, young people often still find themselves isolated, needing support, and lacking access to LBGTQ+ resources.
Outright L/A is place to foster joy and pleasure along with support—as well a commitment to an anti-oppression model where sexuality and gender are considered along with other matters such as race, economic status, and the myraid of other identities that intersect and determine how people see and treat you in the world. In addition, Outright L/A was the first Outright—and indeed one of the first Maine organizations of any kind—to insist on trans inclusion, education, and acceptance as a criterion for all volunteers and an important matter at every level of participation.
Over our 20 years, we’ve offered a weekly drop-in, Youth Advisory Board, It’s Okay to Be Me (a support group for trans and gender non-conforming youth and their guardians), cultural competency and other educational workshops, Q+A (our yearly summer program), and our yearly day long Outright Youth Summit.
