UPDATED CURRICULUM ANNOUNCEMENT from the FSTB
Firefighter I/II and Hazardous Materials

Effective July 1, 2025, the Fire Service Training Bureau will be transitioning the curriculum for Firefighter I and II to Fundamentals of Firefighter Skills and Hazardous Materials Response - Fifth Edition published by Jones & Bartlett.

As part of our accreditation requirements, we must periodically evaluate our curriculum and align it with the current JPRs under NFPA standards. A while back we went with Jones & Bartlett materials for Hazmat Awareness and Operations. To keep consistency, we gathered a group to review and compare the two publications. This group reviewed the whole process, the packaged materials and the delivery options available. This group in consultation with the FSTB came to the consensus of moving to Jones & Bartlett. Again, many of these changes were required to align with certain accreditation standards and to be more consistent with some of the course offerings at the FSTB.

After careful consideration the Central Iowa Training Board of Directors and the CITA-Kirkwood Fire School Committee want to inform you that we have made the difficult decision to discontinue fire school for 2025.

Over the past 38 years, this fire school met the needs and filled the voids of training for both those in our region and those that traveled from outside of our region. This change comes because of the increasing availability of training programs that can be delivered directly to your fire station or county meetings. These tailored training opportunities provide greater flexibility and allow you to stay in your community to meet the needs of your citizens. Additionally, we have struggled with the increasing complexity of finding instructors, new and advanced training courses and equipment logistics.
