Niweskok: From the Stars to Seeds is doing amazing work building community and restoring traditional foodways and relations to the land.

After conducting their food, health and cultural work on leased and borrowed land since 2017 as the Eastern Woodlands Rematriation Collective, the women- and two-spirit-led group of health professionals and educators took title to a former horse and cattle ranch with 245 acres of fields, forests and wetlands in “so-called Swanville” as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit called Niweskok. That translates to “dried seeds for planting” and also “spirit or essence of life” in Penobscot, adapted for their purposes into “From the Stars to Seeds.” Niweskok will steward its returned land in perpetuity. Reading stories like this brings joy and hope. Share them with your communities to show the impact of local change.

🌿 Ever see this plant and think, "Wow... this is straight out of Spielberg's Jurassic Park?" 🦖

This prehistoric-looking plant is native staghorn sumac. It's one of Maine's toughest trees.

You'll often spot native sumac soaking up the sun along roadsides, in old fields, in young forests, and around log landings. While other plants struggle in these disturbed places, sumac thrives. Its dense root system helps hold soil in place, making it a natural champion for erosion control.

And it's a wildlife favorite, too. Its bright red fruit hangs on all winter, providing an important food source for game birds and songbirds when other foods are scarce. Deer browse its twigs, and its dense thickets give wildlife a safe place to hide.

Not to mention its a fall foliage favorite, with characteristic crimson, orange and gold leaves in autumn.

So the next time you pass one of these trees, give it a nod. It may look like it belongs in the age of dinosaurs, but it's doing some pretty important work right here in the Maine woods. 🌲

Wild blackberries, rasberries, and lowbush blueberries are perfect for muffins, pancakes, smothies, or snack time with the kids and grandkids.
