Bellevue OH Kiwanis enjoyed a very informative meeting at the Bellevue Senior Highschool Tuesday evening. FFA advisor, Jeff Karcher and Jr. Lillian Jarrett introduced and explained the hydroponics farm that they have been operating for a couple years.
The idea actually started with Food Service Director, Jacquie Hess who heard about this process at a conference she attended and brought the idea to Karcher. He was eager to try it and asked his students who would like to head it up. Lillian imediately raised her hand, and so it began.
The school system ordered 3 farms one for each school cafeteria. The started with the high school first.
The picture showed Karcher and Jarrett standing in front of half of one open hydroponic device. The tiny dots show the beginnings of lettuce plants. There is light source in the middle when device is closed.
Coated seeds are placed in pods that are in a sheet of about 200 and left to soak. The pods with seeds are later sperated and placed in the holes of the hydroponic device. Nutrients are added to the water tank at the bottom and sent through the device to water the plants. It takes a few weeks to get a full head that is used by school cafeterias.
Kiwanians spend some time asking questions.
It was interesting and encouraging to note that Bellevue Schools are trying out these innovating and cost cutting ideas.
