The Guest Speaker of Norwalk Woman’s Club General Meeting for May was Eric Calderon, Scholarship Relations Specialist of Cerritos College Foundation. He spoke about our scholarship program and how this has greatly affected the recipients. NWC Scholarship Chair, Marie Jackson’s close connection with Cerritos College has greatly enhanced the selection process and the stories we hear from and about the recipients are so heartwarming and inspiring. Recipients of this semester’s scholarship awards are Lindsey Guevara and Mia Hoffmaster. Karina Soriano, who just joined the Norwalk Woman’s Club, was introduced during the meeting. Karina was our Fall 2025 Scholarship Awardee and is graduating this semester with a degree in Journalism and is transferring to Cal State Fullerton to complete her Bachelor’s degree. She was recipient of another scholarship this semester through the Cerritos College Foundation from the Tom and Marie Jackson Alpha Gamma Sigma/ Phi Theta Kappa Award. Both Karina and Lindsey Guevara are shown in the photos below with Marie Jackson, Parimal Shah, Chair of the Cerritos College Foundation, Dr. Jose Fierro, Cerritos College President/Superintendent, and Tom Jackson. Our birthday celebrants this month are Maria De La Torre, Linda Kelly, and Helen Anderson.

The 70th Annual Convention of GFWC/CFWC Los Cerritos District has come and gone and delegates from Norwalk Woman’s Club have brought home a number of certificates and elected positions, including:

The monthly meeting today featured the Club’s Annual Flower Show and the Green Thumbers’ fundraising. Our guest speaker, Asher West from Armstrong Nursery brought samples of plants which would thrive well locally. Our Birthday celebrants this month are Carol Juber and Teresa Jackson. Photos below also show the winners of the Flower Show: Linda Kelly, Tonia Sollas, Lulu Aguirre, Marie Jackson, and Grace Rodríguez.

It’s time once again for our monthly fundraiser at LazyDog Bar and Restaurant, 8800 Apollo Way, Downey, CA on Thursday, February 26, 2026. As usual, a group of us will be there around 11:30 so come join us. If you come any other time, just bring a copy of the fryer below and the Club will still get 15% of your total bill. Norwalk won quite a few awards, from table decorations to individual crafts submitted by our members. Thank you Linda Kelly for taking care of table decorations. We had 2 tables that were judged - the table where members sat for lunch won 1st for Most Original and 2nd for Theme. A smaller table that displayed crafts created by our members but have not been submitted for judging won 1st for Overall Appearance, 1st for Creativity, and 2nd for Originality. All member entries won: Teresa Jackson, 2nd place for a Natural Wonders photograph, Cheryll Kavapalu, 2nd place for a small hand-quilted blanket, and Maria De La Torre 1st place for Embroidery on a Tote Bag.

A big thank you to the Fine Arts Festival Committee for a successful fun-filled day of celebrating 250 years of America. Thank you Committee Chair, Terri Belch and committee members Julie Dollete, Susan Montepio, Sharon Dement, Margie Smuck, and Corinne Lewis as well as judges Hazel Finney, Marsha Frame, and Virginia Posten. And most especially, thank you Long Beach Women’s Club for the delicious lasagna lunch. Lucy Hase, the Program Speaker, talked about the evolution of quilting and brought samples of the quilts she has created.
