Amazing Girls Science Amazing Girl Science seeks to ignite girls’ interest and spark their enthusiasm in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) Saturday Academy Inc.

It all began with an idea. Dr. Cynthia Barnett worked in the Norwalk Public System for over 30 years as a teacher, guidance counselor and assistant principal. When her last daughter left for college, she had a strong desire to give back to her community and to help close the achievement gap and Saturday Academy was born. Dr. Barnett is an entrepreneur and advocate for science, technology, engineer

ing and math (STEM) and has a passion and determination to help young girls discover the excitement and rewards from these disciplines. was founded in 1996 and is based in Norwalk, Connecticut, the 501 © 3 not-for-profit public

charity. Its goal is to design accessible, innovative programs that motivate girls to pursue education and career opportunities in STEM fields while building self-confidence, self-esteem, curiosity and problem solving skills.

Did you know that a black 21-year-old scientist hasn’t yet graduated from college but is already doing literal rocket science🚀?⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Meet Tiera Guinn👩🏾‍⚕️. She is an MIT senior who is helping build a rocket for NASA that could be one of the biggest and most powerful 🔥 ever made, according to WBRC News . ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
She’s an aerospace major with a 5.0 GPA and works as a Rocket Structural Design and Analysis Engineer for the Space Launch System that aerospace company Boeing is building for NASA.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
“You have to look forward to your dream, and you can’t let anybody get in the way of it,” she said. “No matter how tough it may be, no matter how many tears you might cry, you have to keep pushing. And you have to understand that nothing comes easy. Keeping your eyes on the prize, you can succeed.”👊🏻💜⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Here , we seek to ignite girls’ interest in science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics (STEAM) fields of study🧬. At the same time, the activities help girls build core life skills, such as self-confidence, self-esteem, curiosity, problem-solving and positive risk-taking. We hope to produce future scientists like Tiera Guinn. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Like Tiera Guinn , these girls will be engaged in STEAM studies can become the innovative and creative thinkers needed to meet 21st Century challenges.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

She was a woman who never gave up. Despite many devastating hard times, she kept going. She fought, she failed, but she never gave up…. Yes! She was Marie Curie.👩🏼‍🔬⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
We all know the name of this physicist and chemist, but do you recall Marie Curie’s contributions to science? 🤔⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The Polish scientist studied at the Sorbonne, where she became the head of the physics lab in the early 1900s — when women really did not teach science at European universities — and pioneered research in radioactivity💥. She and her husband jointly won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1903 and 1911.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Learn how to make a snowflake❄️ using borax and a few other easy-to-find household items. Click the link in bio 👆🏾 to find out these items in the Fun Science Experiment section.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Instructions:⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
1️⃣Grab a white pipe cleaner and cut it into three sections of the same size. Twist these sections together in the center so that you now have a shape that looks something like a six-sided star. Make sure the points of your shape are even by trimming them to the same length.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
2️⃣Take the top of one of the pipe cleaners and attach another piece of string to it. Tie the opposite end to your small wooden rod or pencil. You will use this to hang your completed snowflake.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
3️⃣Carefully fill the jar with boiling water (you might want to get an adult to help with this part).⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
4️⃣For each cup of water add three tablespoons of borax, adding one tablespoon at a time. Stir until the mixture is dissolved but don’t worry if some of the borax settles at the base of the jar.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
5️⃣Add some of the optional blue food coloring if you’d like to give your snowflake a nice bluish tinge.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
6️⃣Put the pipe cleaner snowflake into the jar so that the small wooden rod or pencil is resting on the edge of the jar and the snowflake is sitting freely in the borax solution.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
7️⃣Leave the snowflake overnight and when you return in the morning you will find the snowflake covered in crystals! It makes a great decoration that you can show your friends or hang somewhere in your house.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Build the strongest geodesic dome with a bag of jelly beans and toothpicks.🤓⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
A geodesic dome is a structure of struts connected to approximate the shape of a sphere (or part of a sphere)🌐. Richard Buckminster "Bucky" Fuller , an American inventor, architect, author, engineering, designer, and futurist, patented the geodesic dome in the 1940s and made it popular. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Try adding some mass on the top of your dome to test its strength, such as books📚. How much mass can your dome support before failing? Are you surprised by how strong it is? When the dome fails, how does it fail? Can you figure out a way to make it even stronger?⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Gertrude uttered those words when she sought laboratory work🧪 during the Great Depression. Due to gender biases that existed during her time, she was told, 'You’re qualified, but we’ve never had a woman in the laboratory before, and we think you’d be a distracting influence.’ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Despite being denied because of gender discrimination, it didn't stop her from realizing her potential, pursuing a career in a male-dominated field, and finally succeeding in science 🧬.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Gertrude Belle Elion👩🏼‍🔬 was an American pharmacologist and co-winner of the 1988 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine 🏆 for her pioneering work in rational drug design 💊.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
