CT Governor Lamont and town leaders proclaim January 16 as Religious Freedom Day in Connecticut and locally.
Religious Freedom Day commemorates the passage in 1786 of the Virginia Statute for Religious Freedom, stating that government may not favor one religion over another, or over non-religion. Passed under the leadership of then Governor of Virginia Thomas Jefferson, post American Revolution, it set an example for the drafting of the U.S. Constitution.
In 1992 the Congress of the United States officially set January 16 as Religious Freedom Day, the date to commemorate the Virginia Statute. In recent years the day has been proclaimed by leaders of Norwalk, Fairfield, Stamford, Greenwich, Bethel, New Britain, Seymour, and Hamden, and by Governors Malloy and Lamont.
