Thanks Annie's Foundation for educating us on what a book ban really means.
Except, obviously, none of that is true.
Everyone understands this.
Including Governor Reynolds, apparently. She's perfectly comfortable using the word ๐ฝ๐ผ๐ when she's talking about cell phones and TikTok.
But put a book in the sentence and suddenly we're holding a graduate seminar on what the word ban really means.
Is a book truly banned if it still exists somewhere in the universe?
Yes.
Yes, it is.
You can buy the book on Amazon.
You can look for it at the public library.
Your parents can buy you a copy.

We promise these concepts can coexist.
And here's the part that actually matters:
Books aren't cell phones. They're not shampoo. They're not parking spaces.
Books let kids encounter lives they haven't lived.
They let kids recognize their own lives on a page and discover that someone else has lived them too.
They let kids ask hard questions about racism, violence, s*x, abuse, religion, identity, power, history, grief, injustice, and the world they're about to inherit.
Sometimes books make kids uncomfortable.
Sometimes they make parents uncomfortable.
Sometimes they make politicians uncomfortable.
A school library isn't supposed to contain only the books that every parent would personally choose for every child.
Parents should absolutely decide what
They should not get to turn their family's bookshelf into everybody else's.
And โyou can always buy it yourselfโ is a particularly lousy answer to a kid who depends on the school library precisely because they can't.
So yes.
If you think a particular book should be banned from a school library, make that argument.
Defend the ban.
Explain why you think it's justified.

And don't worry.
