-Thursday, October 15th at 2 pm at the Temple Hill mausoleum in Castlewood

-Coeburn VFW will leave the Post at 1pm and be responsible for ri**es, flags, and bugle. Anyone interested in riding with us please meet at the Post before 1pm.

I was just informed that DAV, Chapter 56 Veteran Damon Mathews needs our immediate prayers! 🙏
His daughter, Angel Mathews just posted this:
"I like for those of you who believe to pray for my dad he went to the hospital the other day and they found out he has blood clots in his lungs and they shipped him over to another hospital and they called me and they put him in ICU earlier today because they had to up his oxygen levels."

Larry Odle

- Address: 310 6th Street NW, Coeburn, Virginia
- Funeral Service: Following visitation in the chapel, with Pastor Bobby Rose officiating.
- Burial: Greenwood Acres Cemetery, with military honors provided by local veteran organizations and the Virginia National Guard Honor Team.

Please be at the cemetery, ready to go by 3:15 pm. Family has asked for VFW members to also serve as pallbearers. Coeburn Post will be responsible for ri**es, flags, and bugle for this service. To minimize overcrowding anyone can meet us at the Post and ride with us.

Honor Guard members, please make every effort to attend and help us honor a fellow veteran and VFW member who served our country with courage and distinction. Uniform will be Class B’s with a tie and a short-sleeve shirt. If you do not have a uniform please wear service cap, polo shirt, and dress pants.

Let us stand together to render the honors Larry earned through his service and sacrifice, and to show our respect and support for his family during this difficult time.

Rest in Peace, Soldier. Your service will never be forgotten.

John Robert DuVal, IV passed away peacefully, following a brief illness, at his home in Wise, VA on Monday, September 14, 2026. Paula, his wife of 45 years, was by his side. John was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas Todd and Jackie Lee (O’Dell) DuVal; his daughter, Pollie Jo DuVal; his father-and mother-in-law, Billy Joe and Coleen (Elkins) Bevins; niece, Renee DuVal and Baby Aspen; and grandmother-in-law, “Momma Ida” Bevins. John was born in Williamsburg, VA. He graduated from Coeburn High School and enlisted in the U.S. Air Force. John served with the 6903rd Security Squadron in Korea as a Chinese linguist during the Vietnam Conflict. At the end of his service period, John enrolled at Clinch Valley College with the assistance of the G.I. bill. He earned a B.A. in History and met his future wife, Paula, while attending classes. The two were married on July 17, 1981. After graduating from CVC, John began working at Auto World in Big Stone Gap, VA where he worked as a sales manager and supervised finance and insurance for 30 years. John loved his 3 girls-Paula, Whitney, and Pollie-until John Logan was born and he became John’s favorite. John and his family enjoyed traveling, Atlanta Braves baseball, and UVA Cavalier basketball. John is survived by the love of his life, Paula; daughter, Whitney DuVal; the joy-of-his-life grandson, John Logan DuVal; brother, Scott DuVal (Lisa); sister, Cathy DuVal; brother, David DuVal (Carolyn); sisters-in-law, Jewell Worley (Wayne), Rhonda Greear, Nancy Wheatley (Wayne), Melissa Bevins, and Suzy Mullins (Steve). He is also survived by a host of nieces, nephews, and friends. Funeral service for John Robert DuVal IV will be conducted at 2:00 P.M. Thursday, September 17, 2026 at the Sturgill Funeral Home Chapel in Wise, VA with Rev. Mike Porter officiating. DANTE, VIRGINIA – William Harrison Hale, Sr., 80, passed away on Saturday, August 22, 2026. He was born in Trammel, Virginia, the son of the late Charles and Nannie Hale. He was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley Martin Hale; his second wife, Arlene Raines Hale; one son, Bill; and one sister, Edna Neece. Harrison, as he was known, was a Veteran of the United States Army and a member of the U.M.W.A. Local #7170. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, as well as time with his family playing cards and games and watching football and wrestling. Despite traveling throughout his life, he always returned to these mountains, where he grew up, raised his family, and called home. He is survived by his three children, Mark Stacey, Donna Lester-Carver and husband, Lester, and Lisa Hale Fettig and husband, Lester “Butch”; and eight grandchildren. U.M.W.A. Rites for William Harrison Hale, Sr. will be conducted at 7:00 p.m., Thursday, August 27, 2026, at Castlewood Funeral Home in Castlewood, Virginia, by the U.M.W.A. Subdistrict 28 Chaplain Corps. Funeral Services will follow with Rev. Darrell Milgrim and Rev. Oscar Neece officiating. Robert Tipton Carter, age 87, passed peacefully on August 19, 2026. He was born on August 22, 1938, in Pennington Gap, Virginia, in the Big Hill Community. Robert attended and graduated from Pennington Gap High School, after graduation, Robert honorably served his country in the United States Air Force and was a Vietnam Veteran. Robert was of the Baptist faith and was a local barber in Pennington Gap, Virginia, for more than 40 years. He was a familiar and valued member of the community and will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who knew him. He was preceded in death by his parents, Fred P. Carter and Pauline Bailie Carter, and his brothers, James P. Carter, Kenneth Carter, Paul Carter, Gail Carter, and Aaron Carter. He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Pearl V. Carter; two daughters, Cheryl Carter, and Lisa Carter, both of Pennington Gap, Virginia; his sisters, Carolyn Perkins of Pennington Gap, Virginia, and Virginia Wheeler of Pennington Gap, Virginia; and his brothers, Moran Carter of Pennington Gap, Virginia, and Clyde Carter of Avon, Indiana, as well as a host of nieces and nephews. POUND, VA – Sammy “Bo” Mullins, Sr. 76, entered into eternity Tuesday August 11, 2026, from Norton Community Hospital. His loving family was by his side. Sammy was of the Christian faith and a proud Veteran of the United States Army. He was a lifelong son of the mountains and a proud, hardworking surface miner. He had around 40 years of experience. Sammy was a man of quiet strength and a steady hand during hard times, is loved ones could always depend on him. He was devoted to his wife and children. He loved the outdoors, fishing, gardening, or just sitting on the porch. He absolutely loved watching his grandkids participating in baseball, football or riding horses. Sammy was a dedicated Pound Wildcat fan, he never missed a game and was loud and proud. At home he enjoyed watching the Investigative Discovery Channel with all the criminal shows and westerns, especially Bonanza, he was a Bonanza trivia expert. He was a man of simple pleasure and deep roots. Sammy was preceded in death by his son Sammy Mullins, Jr.; his parents Earl and Clohia (Short) Mullins; a sister Beatrice Tompkins; sister-in law Faye Mullins; and brothers-in-law Rad Tompkins and Ronnie Hensley. Survivors include his loving wife of 54 years, Mary Ann (Robinson) Mullins; his son Arron Mullins and wife Merri-Pound, VA; grandchildren Corey Mullins (Haley), Nickel Mullins (Sarah) and Penny Mullins; great grandchildren Emory Mullins, Sam Mullins, Hazel Mullins, Ivey Wren Mullins and Baby Girl Mullins on the way; daughter-in-law Tina Mullins; sisters Cassalee Hensley-Pound, VA and Eva Powers and husband Walter-Pound, VA; brothers Franklin Mullins-Pound, VA, Virgis Earl “Huck” Mullins (Annie)-Fort Worth TX and Billy Gene Mullins (Kathy)-Pound, VA; special aunt Zella “Sis” Mullins-Pound; special niece Amy Mullins (‘Rabbit”); special friends Sherri and Tom Holston; several nieces, nephews and cousins; and a host of friends and loved ones.
