Serenity Acres: The Beginning

Serenity Acres began as many wonderful things do in this world, as a dream. Due to events in my own personal life, and those involved in the development of Serenity Acres, we have become aware of many different groups of people who need a place that offers them the peace, love, and unconditional acceptance so effectively given by animals and found in nature. I was blessed to experience this from a very young age growing up on our farm with my dogs, cats, and horses. Our trainer and board members have had those same experiences as well. We currently provide those experiences for people who do not have the opportunity; whether by physical, mental, financial, or economic means.

The idea for Serenity Acres began with a horse named Thunder. Thunder came to our family farm as a retired training horse needing a place to spend the remaining years of his life. Thunder was with us for about 6 years and was buried in our pasture in the spring of 2012 after struggling with age-related health issues. He was a great first teacher for my children, their friends, and everyone that came into contact with Thunder. Even after he became ill, his love and ability to change the lives of those who spent time with him never ended.

During the time he was with us, I began to imagine the possibility of helping others on a broader scale and with animal therapies of various types. I was able to find another Quarter Horse named Charlie, who joined our family in the summer of 2011. He was an 11 year old gelding with an unexpectedly smooth trot for a Quarter Horse! The following year in the spring of 2012, Whitie joined us. He is an exceptionally well-broke little Quarter Horse and was also an 11 year old gelding. He is the kind of horse who can be trusted with even the most inexperienced or physically challenged rider. Later the summer, I was introduced to Darius and Marcus, two beautiful black Friesian Sport Horses, ages 6 and 7 respectively and also both geldings. They came to my trainer, Cindy Mueller’s facility to brush up on their training in preparation for sale and ended up coming to join the Serenity Acres mission instead! Darius carries himself in such a stately and proud way with beautiful movement, but is also a gentle giant at over 17 hands. Marcus also has graceful movement with a curious and friendly personality. He is almost as tall at just under 17 hands. At the time of this posting in 2017, Whitie and Charlie are 17 years old, Darius is 11 years old, and Marcus is 12 years old. Our trainer also has 4 beautiful Andalusian Horses. Two of her horses, Roberto and Maresa can be used for therapeutic riding as well. Roberto is a very tall and gentle gelding who stands close to 18 hands! Maresa is an extremely sweet and kind mare who is just under 17 hands tall. Both are excellent with our clients and fun to ride.

Thunder began the process of exposing my own children to the wonders of equine relationships. They learned what is involved in the responsibility of caring for horses, such as feeding and grooming them, and making sure they have a safe place to live. They also learned what it is like to have a 1000+ pound animal put his trust in you and allow you to lead or ride him wherever you want to go. Each of our horses offer a special personality and unique qualities to fit the needs of the various clients we serve. We hope to expand our facilities in the future to accommodate an even wider variety of individual needs.
