The Craig Ryder

The Craig Ryder The Craig Ryder is the flagship of Lantern Light Camps and the Wah-Tut-Ca Reservation. The original boats were last seen on Northwood lake in the late 1970s.

Rowing and sailing the "whale boats" around the lake was one of the most notable programs at early Scout camps serving the Greater Lowell area. Thirty years later the Key Foundation decided it was time to bring them back. After much research and fundraising, Lowell's Boat Shop was selected to build such a boat. The Craig Ryder, named for a true Friend and Brother, was christened at Wah-Tut-Ca's 75th anniversary.

It's that time of year again. Camp director Dennis Livoli has set the launch date for the Craig Ryder for June 25th. We still have some work to do before we're ready - interior paint, brightwork, and a few minor repairs. There is a camp work weekend on June 11-12 and Josh Ratty will be leading projects on the Craig Ryder. If you're able to help leave a comment so we know how many people to expect. Thanks!

Good first day for winter maintenance. We got the center board out since it will need some attention this year, removed the oar locks, did a thorough cleaning inside, and got about half of the sanding done. We even got to try out the new box for the oar locks!

It looks like the weather will be warm enough on Saturday to get some work done. We're looking for a few people who can join us in the morning starting around 9 to clean, prep and paint the interior, sand and refinish the oars, and get the sails cleaned and rolled for the winter.

Please leave a comment or contact Dan Smith directly if you're able to help out. Thanks!

I finally got all the pictures from the weekend downloaded and sorted. Here are a few of the best from the AOL weekend.

And just like that our season is over. She's safely tucked away in the boathouse for the winter. Big thanks to Pennacook Lodge for including the Craig Ryder in their AOL weekend, and an even bigger thanks to them for the muscle power needed to get her put away! Great work!

Took care of a few little projects this weekend while covering the waterfront for Lantern Light Camps - put some preservative on the leather chafe guards, color coded the cover so I'll stop putting it on backwards, and most importantly I changed out the white lanyards on the fenders for red in the hopes that they'll be more visible and I'll stop forgetting to pull them in when we're sailing. I also inspected the painter which is showing some signs of wear. It will be good for the rest of the summer but will need some attention once she's on dry land. On Saturday 10 campers and 2 staff rowed to Johnson's despite some strong head winds on the way out. Great to see her getting some use again!
I'm happy to report that she's in good shape overall but it is time for a few coats of paint and varnish so we'll be looking for some volunteers to help once she's out of the water.

The staff is hard at work getting ready for the summer and got to take the Craig Ryder out around the lake yesterday. Unfortunately the was no wind and we couldn't sail so we rowed out and around the island instead.
