Last call! Our spring getaway at Camp Wa Wa Sum is for fishing, making new friends, giving back to the resource, and maybe winning a prize for the largest catch. Arrive Friday noon or later and leave by noon on Sunday. As usual, you will be expected to bring your own towels, linens, toiletries, snacks and sleeping bag. Food will be provided starting Saturday morning.

Wait... "maybe winning a prize for the largest catch”?? Yep. We are hosting our First Annual PHYTU Single Fly Tournament! Everyone will be given the chosen fly, and you’ll have until midnight Saturday to show your skills. First Place goes to the largest trout, second to the most types of trout and accidentally caught fish. Third prize goes to the best story or tale told during the weekend. Flies and rule sheet will be given to you upon arrival. You’ll have all Friday and most of Saturday to win your bragging rights.

Saturday morning begins with breakfast at 7:45 and then it's off to help Bob Thorsen continue his multi-decade bug survey database on the Manistee. Dinner is at 6:00ish. Apart from these defined activities, the weekend is for fishing, swapping stories, and making new friends. We plan on repairing the cedar tree cages after noon on Sunday. That’s voluntary, but it’s a beautiful stretch of the South Branch.

Mark your calendars and buy your tickets now! A number of members have been getting two or more friends together for the weekend. That's perfect - they do not have to be TU members. Camp Wa Wa Sum is a great venue, a historical throwback, and of course, there is the screened in porch overlooking the Holy Waters...

Please join us in Northville at Hatchery Park this TOMORROW morning at 10:00. Why? Johnson Creek is a "Type 1" stream and will be officially open for trout fishing.

Yes! Johnson Creek has resident trout. But being a Type 1 stream means the DNR has certain rules about when and how to fish on this stream. The sign shown above is the result of our Chapter, the DNR and the Northville Parks and Recreation Department. On it is what you need to know.

Bob Batchik, President of Paul H Young and Connor Adams of Northville Parks and Rec are shown with the completed installation. The final step is Saturday morning with Northville Mayor Brian Turnbull presiding over the dedication...and showing his excitement for the new trout season. All are welcome and we hope to see you!

Not for Lake Superior State University’s Ashley Moerke and Trout Unlimited’s Bryan Burroughs. They will provide an update on didymo status and trends based on survey data from across the state and discuss the relationship between water chemistry and didymo blooms. On February 9th, a coalition of Michigan conservation organizations—including Michigan TU—filed expert testimony with the Michigan Public Service Commission opposing Consumers Energy’s proposed sale of 13 hydroelectric dams to an out‑of‑state private equity firm. These dams sit on five of Michigan’s most iconic rivers: the Au Sable, Manistee, Muskegon, Grand, and Kalamazoo. Together, they shape the coldwater fisheries, communities, and outdoor traditions we work every day to protect.

You can read the full press release here: https://michigantu.org/core-values/reconnect/press-release-%C2%B7-february-10-2026/

The testimony, submitted by the Environmental Law & Policy Center on behalf of five leading conservation groups, outlines serious concerns about the risks this sale would create for Michigan’s rivers and for the public. Experts in hydrology, economics, energy policy, fisheries, and bankruptcy law all reached the same conclusion: transferring these aging dams to a private equity buyer—one with no long‑term operational track record—would increase environmental risks, reduce public oversight, and likely shift future liabilities onto Michigan taxpayers.

We encourage members to explore the Michigan Public Service Commission docket for Case U‑21985 and read some of the testimony firsthand. It provides a clear picture of what is at stake for our rivers and our communities: https://mi-psc.my.site.com/s/case/500cs000016QyW1AAK/in-the-matter-of-the-application-of-consumers-energy-company-for-approval-of-the-sale-of-its-river-hydroelectric-generating-fleet-related-power-purchase-agreement-and-other-relief

We’ve seen what happens when private owners fail to maintain critical infrastructure. The catastrophic failures at the Edenville and Sanford Dams, and the bankruptcy of the Au Train Dam, left communities devastated and taxpayers footing enormous bills. We cannot allow history to repeat itself thirteen more times.

To help members better understand the issues and the broader implications for Michigan and the Midwest, we invite you to join the Environmental Law & Policy Center, Michigan Trout Unlimited, and Anglers of the Au Sable for an ELPC Thinks conversation on Thursday, March 5 at 1 p.m. ET. If you care about fishing in iconic blue‑ribbon trout streams, protecting river habitat and biodiversity, and ensuring sensible energy policy and fair rates, this discussion will be invaluable.

As this case moves forward, we will continue to advocate for decisions that protect our fisheries, safeguard our communities, and ensure that any future dam transitions prioritize ecological health and public accountability. We will keep you informed as the MPSC reviews the testimony and considers next steps.

Thank you for standing with us. Your voice, your engagement, and your commitment to Michigan’s rivers make this work possible.
