REMINDER....
The Northville Township Historic Fund and Northville District Library have teamed together to present local historian Joe Oldenburg's seminar on the "Detroit House of Corrections" (DeHoCo). His seminar will be held tomorrow, Tuesday, September 16, at the Northville District Librart at 7pm.
DeHoCo was Detroit's main prison, which held both men and women inmates. It opened in 1861 and was located in today's Eastern Market. By the 1920's overcrowding led to separate men's and women's prisons being built in Plymouth and Northville Township, respectively. Famous inmates included Belle Starr, the Bandit Queen, and John Sinclair, a 1960's era poet whose imprisonment led to the annual Hash Bash in Ann Arbor. Both prisons housed inmates into the 1980's, but their age and maintenance costs led to their closings and final demolitions in 2017.
For the whole story, attend tomorrow's talk. Please RSVP to the Northville District Library at 248-349-3020.
